It baffles me that everyone does not just follow me around to all the threads that I post in.
I am kidding.
I began removing chicken wire from the run this morning, but stopped because I was getting too much rust dust in my eyes. You would think that I would have a ton of protective eyewear sitting around. That stuff got put away with my leathers. No clue where. So, I am going to have to wait until my shipment comes with my new goggles.
When I called the landscaper to order my crushed limestone, he said he'd be out soon. :th
I had just showered, and had to not only get dressed again, but get sweaty again too. :(
I now have 18 feet of wire removed from the sides of the run, and about four from the top. The back nine feet are filled in with the limestone. More tearing might happen today, but I might just continue working on the ground. Loosening soil, removing it and filling in.
On the plus side, the guy came back with a load of gravel to fill in a rut in my driveway. It was not a big rut, but it was definitely worth filling in.
Okay, the real plus side is that I have at least gotten started. Thanks to wonderful people here. Chaos and Fisherlady have been awesome as usual.

So would canning chicken in a pressure canner be one way to process older birds? In bone or off bone? I am with LMP - I gotta get a pressure canner!
I have read that is what some people do with their older birds....so, when are we canning

Stake, would say a good rooster is nature or nurture?
It is just at this moment occurring to me that I can't be sure that my Rock will be as awesome as my mutt. When my lucky roo (escaped on processing day) tries to mate, Steven always comes out of nowhere to save her.

I do believe the mean gene is passed down. I am wondering about the good husband gene

..oh, sorry...was it okay to laugh...

imho, shotgun...12 gauge takes care of business...if you are suburban shoot #6 shot....has about a 35yd kill range for small game including fox/racoon...etc....if you need a longer shot #2 will give you about 30yds more 'legs'.....

be careful about shooting hawks...they are mostly protected....but, you are allowed to protect your pets/flock...better to kill the intruder and call the game commission than kill it with a pellet gun and hide the incident....my two cents.....
omgosh stake...where are you that you can sound off with a boomer??...
I know certain individuals do it here

..., but this is the W.W.W., so...at least that is some act
I've had a number of boys...and only one really stood out, a CCL Line "B" from Jordan Farms....he was very laid back around people, (ate out of my hand and would allow a small pet), he had all the girls in tow...if he barked, they all responded ASAP....he stripped all my blue berries off the plants for the girls...and left the pen to defend one of his girls from a fox...(she wouldn't stay in the pen)...

I'm thinking its a 'karma thing'.....some birds like to be around people some don't ...some roos are pretty rough on the girls...he wasn't but covered all....he had a certain gravitas, his flock wanted to be around him...he had a calming affect on the girls...well, my two cents.....let the rock/mutt play itself out....
Read in other threads that the breeders look for good "gentleman" traits...they won't keep rooster otherwise

If she's serious about sitting then yes I'll put some fertile eggs under her.

sorry to chime in on another conversation, but, I've had a "B" line girl (Jordan Farms), go broody and hatch a few...this year she threatened x3 times and gave up after 48hrs each time...its a pisser because you want all eggs to hatch and if you wait a few days you make the broody decide to sit on eggs or chase chicks....

Well, Ana's first chick hatched last night. Unfortunately, I only found out because when I was looking for eggs, I found the baby, cold and dead next to her. It must've gotten our from under her

This is her first time actualy hatching eggs. Last time, I just grafted chicks to her and she did an amazing job raising them. She has 3 eggs left and one was peeping like crazy this morning. I'll be keeping a close eye on her.

yep, thats happened to me twice....girl woundn't leave the eggs to gather the chick in.....

Thread hog warning....

well tried to move the 4wk olds out side yesterday....well one of the pissers freaked out and was just small enough to get through the 2x4 welded wire....so, back inside....and hoping the 1wk olds don't learn to fly out of their 'brooder box' til I get the older ones situated.....

We were packing and ready to move to NY tomorrow, and my BIL called to tell us that he doesn't want our chickens anymore.

They just confirmed that they will come pick them up a couple days ago. I'm glad that our girls didn't go to such a unresponsible family anyway. Luckyly , hubby's cousin having 5 chickens will take our girls and the coop and run. They have a small coop but our coop is big enough for 11 girls. It's good to have a big family, so there's always someone can help. I even didn't know they have chickens until last week, or I'll let them take our girls instead of my BIL at the beginning . You know, we chicken people understand each other better.
