So We have been finding a duck egg every day, but since the 2 ducks are free range, we assumed the other duck was hiding her nest. The one that we find her eggs she lays them in the same hidden spot every day, but we made the mistake the first time we found her nest of taking all the eggs out, she immediately stopped laying there and found a new hiding spot, so now we fake her out with 2 fake eggs, she lays a 3rd egg with those 2 every night, which we are able to collect. Anyways, yesterday there were 2 small blue eggs laying out in the open near the pond, I was a little confused since we have been finding a larger white egg. Well this morning, there was a larger white egg in the nest, and a smaller blue tinted egg laying in the open again. I am assuming that means the 2nd duck wasnt actually laying until now. So, how the heck did she lay 2 eggs in one day? and also, why is my duck laying blue eggs?? Anyone have any guesses?

We were packing and ready to move to NY tomorrow, and my BIL called to tell us that he doesn't want our chickens anymore.

They just confirmed that they will come pick them up a couple days ago. I'm glad that our girls didn't go to such a unresponsible family anyway. Luckyly , hubby's cousin having 5 chickens will take our girls and the coop and run. They have a small coop but our coop is big enough for 11 girls. It's good to have a big family, so there's always someone can help. I even didn't know they have chickens until last week, or I'll let them take our girls instead of my BIL at the beginning . You know, we chicken people understand each other better.

Glad you found a good home for them!

Okay, I just realized how much I have been hogging this thread, so...going to keep this to a minimum. Sorry.

Garden was a jungle, got it under control...was away for a few days. Catching-up is always so much fun...

One the plus side, was able to harvest quite a few tomatoes. I have a pic of the issues I am having with the romas this year..it is really bad. Not going to get the amount of tomatoes we were hoping for. Some is better than none though.

When I weed, I use them as much in the rows. It works very well. We don't even have the grass clippings to cover the soil this year.
See what I mean about the toms.?! Awful!

Here is what I have so far...

I guess this could make a few jars of stewed tomatoes.

The storm that rolled through this past Wednesday, totally mangled the sunflowers, real bummer. Got some tied up again, lost a lot though. I like to use them as boredom busters in the winter for the girls.
That still looks liek a decent crop that you got so far. But the plants do look like they're pooping out early...

They want to keep you guessing ! I didn't know ducks could lay blue eggs, cool!

I managed to get a good look at Ana's baby today and I now can't say for certain that it's a CCL cockerel. I'm not quite sure what it is lol but it's a cute little stinker! It hatched from a blue egg which I had thought was from one of my CCL girls (still could be I suppose) but this baby is red tinted which leads me to assume that my son's obnoxious RIR cockerel is the daddy. I guess we'll just have to wait to see how it feathers in. I'll get pictures when she brings him out into the world. Right now they're still hunkering down in the nest. She still has 2 eggs left but nothing happening there yet. I know they developed though, at least part way. Maybe I'll candle them tonight since Ana is very tolerant.

I love to see the blue duck eggs (didn't know about those!) and the chicken shaming! :) And the potential RIR x Legbar chick sounds interesting!

I have a potential update on my Welsummer x Legbar chick from Meyer Hatchery. I called Meyer and they said that in this hybrid, the black breast feathers were no sure sign that I got a cockerel instead of the pullet I ordered.... So, I went back to the pics I took of the pure Welsummer I got from them last year that was supposed to be a girl but turned out to be a rooster. I was pretty much resigned to this year's chick being a rooster, too, but now that I compare them to last year's chick, I'm not sure anymore:

Here is LAST year's Meyer Welsummer, at 3 weeks (Hazel, renamed Henry):

3 weeks and 4 days:

And here is THIS year's Meyer Welsummer x Legbar OE, at 3 weeks and 5 days (Hazel II, hopefully not to be renamed Henry II):

So, like I said, I had given up on this chick being a pullet, but now comparing Hazel II to Henry I, I am starting to hope again. The difference in the size and color of the comb is pretty remarkable. And this chick's comb isn't really that much bigger than the Lavender Orpington's I got on the same day--a little bit, but not way bigger, and not really redder, either. But that black breast... The only thing in the mix that should have a black breast is a Welsummer rooster, right? Not a legbar or welsummer hen, and not a legbar roo. And this chick's tail feathers are noticeably longer than the other chicks' its age.

Meyer said I'd have to wait for crowing to be sure, but I'm just not that patient!!
