We just got out first blue egg from our special lil' gal, Pizza! We are all super excited!

Congratulations! It's beautiful. Didn't know you could get eggs from a pizza... :D

Finally got the expansion started today! It's zip tie central until we continue tomorrow, but the chickies were very happy!

Checking out the new digs, along with our pup :D

Tonight I checked on them after they went to bed, and they all now sleep separate rather than cuddle together in the corner. My babies are growing up so fast! :')

Sidenote: My FIL helped today and said it was plenty big for 3 birds, and I chuckled to myself like "Yes... 3... For now..." :gig

Looks good. Yes three chickens is certainly below the legal minimum for this group. :duc

Good morning Stake! How are the OE's doing?

Moms are in the main coop, and I think I have another broody.
when "broody" season is upon us, every time a girl sits a bit too long I am like

, then I see her walking around and find a beautiful egg, then I am like..

....

Makes life so much easier when the mommas take care of the babies!!
Whew! She was just laying late.

...it doesn't take long for them to make the grass shorter that's for sure!! Our girls like to dig holes to China, real ankle-busters

Well, when it comes to adding more 'love' to the yards...the people here, on this thread, are fantastic at enabling, er,..i mean supporting in that area!!

, also, any questions or concerns you have, just ask and everyone does their best to help out!...

I know! I was originally aiming for 5, after we got rid of our 8 boys, but someone suggested a limit. Until I mentioned broodiness and that Tiny is more likely to get broody, and that same someone got excited about the possibility of her hatching eggs! :jumpy

they will enjoy it very much!!:cd ...it doesn't take long for them to make the grass shorter that's for sure!! Our girls like to dig holes to China, real ankle-busters:rolleyes:

I have a little dusting box made for them, just need to set it and fill it (in hopes of avoiding chicken craters!) Or I may buy a rubbermaid container that way it's easier to cover...

The idea was that the new pen can be opened when we are home, that way the grass doesn't get destroyed too quickly. I've seen those grass frame things, the hardware cloth on a deep frame, so chickens don't peck all the way down to the root, but not sure how effective that really is?

Also, as far as adding wood pieces into coops/runs: to paint or not to paint? I know a coating will help prolong pieces, but I also know how curious and pecky chickens are and don't want them chipping/eating paint. I'm asking because I have that dust box I made, and a pallet with added ledges for climbing/roosting - and I have been reading all different kinds of opinions on what paints to use. So what do my fellow Pennsylvanians think?

oh...mine just dig for the sake of digging..

..hopefully yours will get another idea..

I am not sure how well those hardware cloth 'screens' over-all, long term. Have read others have good luck with them. i thought of going that way for our "chicken garden".. the concept makes total sense, but never put that theory to a practical test.
Finding just as easy to partition off the front section of their run and just use that area to plant their veggies, works as a great 'privacy screen' for them too.

I never had an issue with them pecking at paint...not sure what others have encountered...i read people painting things all the time, and of course the more you read the more different opinions you will encounter ....IMO..hhaha, do what works for you best...if you feel like painting something to make it look nice or save the wood from weather..well then go for it...
oh, we did polyurethane their first coop..never had an issue with them pecking/eating any thing...there you go.

If anyone is interested in a very high quality Ameraucana rooster, PM me. I have Blacks and Silvers from John Blehm, a breeder in Michigan that wins national shows regularly. These are gorgeous birds, I just have about 6 too many of each color. I am planning to let them free range around the farm, but if someone wants them for breeding or just as pretty pets, I would be happy to give them a more appreciative home (rather than just running with the local "hoi poloi").

I have pure Jill Reese Legbar roos too, if you want to upgrade your Legbar stock.

As promised, I took pictures of Ana and her babies today since she brought them out. Both babies are red-ish so I'm assuming Cinnamon (RIR) is the dad. Both chicks hatched from CCL eggs so they should be an interesting cross as they grow. They're cute little buggers now though :)

of course, Miss Maple insisted on attention while I was sitting and taking pictures lol

*Aurora-..Looks like she is doing a great job being mom!!
Love the silver pencil/partridge!!! My gosh, i have a 'thing' for that particular pattern, for some reason
idunno.gif
..hahaha...
Miss Maple looks like a real sweetheart!....our two barred rocks are so affectionate too, really something to have a chicken be that "cuddly", the rest of the flock is "look but don't try to touch, unless we are in the mist of laying"...then we take full advantage of them!..hahaha, oh my, that didn't sound right...
