What a crazy day already! Would a hawk leave a pile of feathers when catching a chicken? Because, i caught this guy today! He managed to get himself stuck in the chicken run. Thankfully, he was too panicked trying to get out that he didn't notice my two hens that were in there worn him. I got the girls or and caught him with a total. We'll be driving a few miles and releasing him. Hubby wants to keep him because he's cool lol.

Wow, that's amazing....flying into the pen is real unusual....Before building my 'fort knox', I ran some fishing line across the top of the pen...supposedly, hawks can see it but won't fly through it....

Depending on the size of the hawk and the size of the chicken, the hawk would not be able to fly off with your silkie....I have seen a small hawk take a small bird, fly to a tree branch with it then eat it.....I had a small brown leghorn that was killed and eaten on the spot....the hawk returned the next morning to finish the carcass...

PS: Just wanted to add, having a hawk and chickens in close proximity is probably not a good idea....lol.....

My run is roofed so it had to have flown through the open door and couldn't get back out. It was a small hawk but I have no clue how strong they actualy are. There was no carcass left or blood or anything. Just a lot of feathers.

We just got home from releasing it. That was cool to watch

If I kept both chickens and a hawk, training would definitely be done away from home and free flying would NOT be happening around the flock lol

No such luck, I found a big pile of silkie feathers this morning Jewel will be missed. Poor Blue seems lost without her, they were always inseparable. As soon as I release the new welbars from Dheltzel, I'll be seperating Blue and Angel and waiting for eggs since they're my last two bearded silkies.

So sorry to here about Jewel...loosing birds just sucks. Forgive my bad memory if you already mentioned, but were planning them for breeding or were they pets and broodies? If pets and broodies I have some silkies and half silkie/half bantam cochin mix that I would gladly pass along to you and the kids. They are adorable....and will be broody, but not show quality probably. (Although, how can show quality be seen under all that fluff??)

That's incredible. My out are very brave! I would have probably picked up him up too lol.

We found a 'foreign' egg in Jo's box late this morning (she is on her 4th brood of the year) and since Janeway is also broody and Gracie is still raising her last group we only had 2 possible suspects in that coop.... Muffin and Little Foot are both Silkies (almost 7 months old) who haven't crowed but also hadn't laid...so we have been hoping....

So I reviewed the security camera and found the culprit, my Step-Son will be happy since he has really liked this little bird since the first time he held her. I kept warning him to not get his hopes up, but now am tickled to be able to tell him his 'Muffin' is a girl!

Congrats! They can give you confusion for sure!

I let the silkies out this afternoon with the big girls. Nobody seemed to care! True to nosy chickens, they cared more about what there was in their cage than about the silkies themselves. They will go in the pen tonight too.

So I have some free loaders. Granted we don't really need the eggs, but my girls are patiently awaiting blue eggs for my Easter eggers. They are 30 weeks old and I have other breeds that are also 30-32 weeks old and they aren't laying either. Is this common for them to be that old and not laying yet?

OK Folks apologies for the rant.....

Well, went to go to work mid day....as I approached the truck, saw none of the girls were out in the run....thought it really unusual as a perfect time for sunning....decided to get the mail out of the box...as I'm standing there....Mr. fox runs out of my neighbor's driveway 20' away crosses the street and into other yards....I yelled...this PIA had no long hair and didn't seem change his stride when I yelled....I dunno...if I'd have had a stone in my hand I could've hit him...well at least everyone is still kicking....

yep, when I have two coops going and let them all run together, they always go to the other pen to empty the 'other' feed bowl.....
