Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

A few days ago, I heard a ruckus down by the coops before I let the birds out. I thought that something was very wrong with all the quacking going on. Stephen was upset too, but the quacking had me very worried. Jojo sounded like he was going to kill someone!
When I saw three ducks outside, I figured my birds would chase them off like they do most visitors from next door. Instead, the Pekin cross Drake and even the two smaller ducks had a little tussle with my ducks. I was annoyed to say the least. By the evening, I was thinking about having the extra ducks for supper! Everyone was getting along just fine by then. I just don't want the extra mouths to feed or space taken in the coop. After several days, I finally asked the neighbor about the ducks. They are not hers. I now own three more ducks.
I am so glad I did not kick the ducks out late at night the previous two nights. Or was it three? :D

Being mallards they could have been raised by someone and escaped, thinking they wanted to fly south or live the wild life....then reality struck and they missed easy meals and warm houses! LOL

The little one with the black stripe on tne right side should be a real pretty bird, would love to see its color in 6 months!

Sometimes I wonder if I should selectively breed for the cutest chicks, since they are the main "product" I sell. I have to admit I looked at raising Orust because the chicks are so distinctive and cute. It turns out the roos tend to be extra aggressive and I figured they would be picking fights a lot longer than they would be cute little chicks.

My favorite chicks by far are BLRW or any breed of blue or lavender. I was breeding BLRW for a while just because I liked the look of the chicks so much.

But then I noticed the prevalence of cross beak and stopped breeding them all together. I do like the look of the mature Silver Laced Wyandotte I don't see any cross beaks on these chicks.

That is interesting. Silkies and EE are most prone to crossbeak. At least, that is the information I found.

It sounds rediculously windy out tonight! I'm hoping that the wind will blow down the rest of those oak leaves so I can run the lawn sweeper just one more time tomorrow and be done with it! I ran it for an hour the other day and got everything picked up before dark. By morning, the yard was covered again :/

It woke me up at 3 something this morning

My Cali Grey squatted for me today! The one is very friendly. I often wonder if she was the sick one I almost lost. Looking forward to maybe getting a couple of eggs before the light is totally gone for the year. Maybe!

Oh those leaves! I have to bag some up this weekend so I can have them for the run later. I wonder if I will be able to find any....

So you got 3 new ducks by osmosis?

:lau Now that I know they are all three males, I guess someone just didn't want too many drakes. They have gotten my oddball girl to stop pining over her siblings though. I can honestly say I'm not sure what to do. I will have to make a decision the very first time there's a disagreement with the boys. Until then, I know that "it" will have to happen but I'm not sure when.

So my in-laws don't understand our chickens. They don't see the purpose of us having them if we arent going to eat them. We have 27 pullets/hens and 1 roo (probably getting more in the spring). Granted we don't need that many, but we like them and they are more pets to us. The eggs are a bonus. We are building a new barn and we are moving the chickens over to there. They will have a temporary space until we get their side finished in the spring. For some reason my in laws have it in their head we are building this barn just for our chickens and it's a waste of money. Putting the chickens in the new barn is just a perk for them. We have other stuff we are going to be storing in the barn so I can park in our garage for the winter. Our old barn is in poor condition and that's where the chickens are. They think we should leave the chickens in there and forget about doing anything else. We have sand down for them, but it's on the ground so it continues to draw moisture from the ground. We need to get them moved to keep them warmer for the winter. It's really irrating that the in laws can't understand why we have them. I forgot to mention my MIL won't eat the eggs because they are from a chicken!!! Yes you read that right. She eats eggs, but from the store because some how they are different.

Hippy:

My parents thought me (in surburbia) was nuts getting chooks....now they are quite interested in 'how they are doing'....'in laws' can be a pia....seems they feel comfortable having an opinion on how you spend your money...maybe a clarification is in order...lol........my two cents.....
