Mine were the same way, always asking what I'm going to do with all these birds! Boot but, they think they're really neat now. Mom even babysat them all for a weekend over the summer for me. She had a great time :)

So my in-laws don't understand our chickens. They don't see the purpose of us having them if we arent going to eat them. We have 27 pullets/hens and 1 roo (probably getting more in the spring). Granted we don't need that many, but we like them and they are more pets to us. The eggs are a bonus. We are building a new barn and we are moving the chickens over to there. They will have a temporary space until we get their side finished in the spring. For some reason my in laws have it in their head we are building this barn just for our chickens and it's a waste of money. Putting the chickens in the new barn is just a perk for them. We have other stuff we are going to be storing in the barn so I can park in our garage for the winter. Our old barn is in poor condition and that's where the chickens are. They think we should leave the chickens in there and forget about doing anything else. We have sand down for them, but it's on the ground so it continues to draw moisture from the ground. We need to get them moved to keep them warmer for the winter. It's really irrating that the in laws can't understand why we have them. I forgot to mention my MIL won't eat the eggs because they are from a chicken!!! Yes you read that right. She eats eggs, but from the store because some how they are different.

To me I think of chickens as pets also I don't eat eggs no matter, store or mine. They all have a name and will be staying here until they die of old age. They are pets just like a dog or cat to me. Don't listen to your in laws it's your money.
 
I have told them it's my money I'll do what I want to with it. They think we could use our money for something better like building on to our house. We are also getting rabbits and possibly a goat in the spring. I can't wait what they say about that.

Sounds to me that she passed the entrance exam and is ready to graduate to a flock of her own! Wonder where she could find some? :gig

Evening All!
I hope your Saturday was enjoyable! I spent the evening playing monopoly! This was night 2 of a game we started last night and we are going to need a third! My 7yo and I are the only ones left but we just keep going back and forth!

Our roosters are still being very agressive, but the hubby doesn't want to try to replace them right now. Mostly, with the shorter days and cooler weather, we have been leaving them in the coop more. This also helps since we had the fox a week or so ago. One flew up high enough to scratch my 7yo on the chest yesterday...all my son did was walk by. My son was NOT pleased.
We will absolutely be looking to replace come spring.

I am jumping for joy that the 'lady bugs' didn't hatch this year. A year without a lady bug infestation is fine by me. Of course they aren't actual lady bugs but if you get them where you live, it's probably what you call them. I'm almost disapointed that the chickens didn't get to experience it...they love japanese beetles so I'm pretty sure they would love these too!

I suspect your "lady bugs" are box elder bugs. You can google pics of them. They are annoying, but harmless. Also, easily gotten rid of if you remove the box elder trees that are close by because that is the only thing they can eat. Box Elders are a species of maple, but not a very desirable one, so most people choose to cut them down and plant something better in their place.
