Very sorry you had to experience that. You did everything you could, but necropsy is terribly expensive, at least it is with puppies. If you're not concerned about contamination in your coop but more interested in finding out the cause and what else you could have done, then I would rethink the necropsy idea and take solance in the fact that you truly did try your best. Bless you for trying.
 
Whoa Nellie! that's a lot of chickens ! must be at least 60 chickens there !!

Any chance any of the Pittsburgh area folks live in New Kensington or Arnold? Or know anyone who lives there? My friend is running for the school board there and apparently disrupting the establishment... they are attacking her for 'illegally' having chickens. So she's now trying to change the ordinance. Unfortunately, I had another heat spike yesterday when it got very warm. Do they sell incubators that adjust the temps automatically? I would assume they do, but what is the approximate cost? I hate having to be always concerned about adjusting this little whirlygig handle thingy.


I am enjoying this nice spring break, but it was so hot today! I feel like I was finally acclimating to the cold, and I can't handle the heat yet. :lol:

Good incubators do not have that problem. I think you have one of the cheaper styrofoam ones, right? I could never get them consistent, no matter how much I fiddled with them. I hatched chicks in those, but once I got a cabinet incubator with an adequate heating element, those cheap ones have just been collecting dust. Either the GQF Genesis or the Brinseas won't have that issue, but the cheap GQF's and the "knock offs" they sell at farm stores are just not able to provide enough heat to deal with fluctuating room temps. I think they could probably be fixed if a second heating element was wired into them, but there is not a lot of room in there and you have to think about burning chicks or fire hazards.

Eek. I had to toss three turkey eggs tonight, leaving me with only two viables. I had to also toss a bantam langshan egg also, leaving me with only 4 of those. Dheltzel, if you come across a decent small to medium sized incubator, can you let me know? I've been checking Craigslist, but there seems to only be that one all the way out in Carlisle. A bit too far of a drive for me.

Today, I moved my keeper chicks from the crowded bedroom brooder out to the big screen porch brooder. There are 11 chicks and Sprinkles. They all look so TINY in there! It's their first time on shavings too. Sprinkles panicked when his feet first touched the shavings. He ran across the brooder and flew up on to the roost as fast as he could lol. He called down after a minute and came down. The 3 little seabright babies were in heaven! They're about 3 weeks old and loved the shavings! They were digging themselves pits and almost burying themselves in their excitement and of course, filling the food dish. Other residents include an F2 olive egger, BCM, SPR, crele orpington, and even a tiny little Serama lol

Lol, the crele orpington and the serama were from Sally Sunshine. She sent me some eggs but only a few hatched. I do not have the serama seperate. She'd be one lonely baby! She's quite content to wiggle under everyone else's feet and wings.
 
Well if that Crele Orpington is feeling 'out of place' feel free to send him/her here. . :D

I've got a soft spot for Orpingtons.
