Thanks for sharing. That is very good information to have. Was this th chicken case where we suspected botulism? Or was this a different case? I get everything mixed up!

This was a little 4-6 wk old golden laced Wyandotte that had a chronic cough/sneeze and gasping for air. Died on Tuesday after a week of being sick.

Sorry you lost it, but I'm glad you found out why.

I
Update: I sent the sick chick in to PADLS for a necropsy. Initial report is aspergillosis, possibly due to mold spores in/around bedding. Lab will be running more tests just to be thorough. Lab was very helpful about answering questions. I will update with other results once I get them.

For the curious: Shipping a dead chick = $42 overnight UPS. You should buy your own styrofoam cooler or make your own box, because if your UPS is like mine, they may not have them in stock. I told them it was an animal specimen for testing, and they were thankfully understanding (and curious) but I still had to do some last minute improvising.

I'm really sorry about this. So much harder to have to keep processing this. Having answers is comforting, I hope.

Yeah, it helps. It's also opened my eyes to benefits of hatching vs buying chicks, and of course biosecurity. I have the remaining 2 chicks still in the brooder and will probably keep them there for the full quarantine period, until the end of the month, before I introduce them to my 3 one y/o girls. In the future if I plan to add more chicks, I think I may hatch them myself or have my Silkie do the job...

So this happened...

QUADS!! (One not showing) Let's see April do that!

I sent you 4 reds, 1 black, and 3 red bronze :)

We have cut them up and added them to eggs. DELICIOUS! we mostly grow the garlic for medicine though. If someone starts getting sick, they eat a clove of garlic at night before bed. Works wonders :)

I will try this . I'm assuming raw?

Both the Bielefelders and Welbars have terrible fertility (less than 25%), so I have not been offering those eggs for sale. CCL eggs I have a lot of, and they have decent fertility. I don't have any cochins. If you can work out a meet with @emorems0
then I will send some eggs back and you can see what you get.

Thank you! I sent the PM
