Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

:frow Hellooo chicken people.

Posting from Montgomery County in Southeast PA.

We currently have 2 RIR, a Buff Orp, a Buttercup, and an EE (accidental) rooster, all almost 7 months old. Recently lost 2 girls to a fox (going to wear that guy). We are looking to add to our flock now or soon, so the new girls will be lay-ready for Spring.

Glad to have a place for my bird babble from now on.
You must be really close to me. I'm in Chester Co, but very close to Pottstown and I work in King of Prussia. If you want more chicks next spring, look me up, I will have lots of them.

Just checking out the YMCA chicken pen this morning after swimming camp.

Looks like they have a Creme Brabanter (your fave @AnneInTheBurbs !!), a frizzle, 2 guineas, 2 red star, and a big fluffy white one with feathered legs and feet. We've been to see these chickens before a few months ago, same set of chickens, no new introductions, but they are always fighting. The guineas fight each other and pick on the Red Stars, and the Creme Brabanter was also pecking the Red Stars. Made me feel lucky that very little of that goes on in our flock. We've got quite a harmonious bunch. Ours are ranging all day though.

My friend lives in the city and isn't allowed roosters, would anyone be interested in a young Mille Fleur D'Uccle rooster? Apparently a good specimen, friendly, and just started crowing a few days ago. **And I will be traveling east on Labor Day weekend, so this is for anyone along the chicken train route (aka PA tpk).

Little Crackles didn't make it. I found him/her dead yesterday morning under Ana. I'm not sure what happened but maybe she got stepped on. So, since I have 2 broodies (Ana and an Ayam Cemani), I made a trade with someone I know greatest for some day old chicks. I have him turkey eggs and he gave me 5 bantam cochin chicks. Both girls took the babies willingly. Woke up this morning and each hen lost a chick. Ana is experienced so I don't understand what's going on in her nest. Her other baby is very happy, healthy, active, and climbing all over her. The Ayam Cemani apparently had a duck invade her nest this morning to lay an egg so I'm guessing that's how she lost hers. She has 2 now and even though she's a first timer, she's doing a fantastic job. I did move her to a different nest and blocked off the front for a few days so nobody can invade again.

Break through yesterday. My puppy did not chase the loose chicken!!! She told me the hen was out but did not chase!! I've been working with the remote collar for over a week now. Working on come with the beep and then small shock when she doesn't come. Two goals 1-don't run onto the street when people walk or bike past and 2-don't chase chickens that escape the fencing!! Progress on both!

Today was the last day off summer vacation for my kids. I don't get it. When I was a kid, I dreaded the first day of school. My kids are extatic and can't wait!

One of my neighbors asked for a dozen eggs this morning and in return gave us a bag FULL of hot peppers. Hubby is the only one that eats them but I cut them up and froze them. You'd think that I would learn by now to wear gloves when I do this stuff. My hands started burning about an hour after I finished the peppers. Apparently, I've burned them :/

I also managed to process 4 boys today. It seems so wrong butchering silkies but I waited extra time and tried to find homes for these guys for a couple months and there were no takers. I still have a couple blue silkie boys left. I'm going to have to make a choice on who I'm keeping soon and who I'm not. I'm also going to have to prices my big CX roo soon. I thought I'd be able to keep him to breed since he was doing so well for so long but it looks like he's developed bumblefoot. It's too big for me to operate and on both feet. I know if I manage to fix one foot, he'll damage the other leg while the first one heals. I tried. I'm just going to have to rely on the girls for the meat project.
