I’ve seen people use straw insulation behind twine, and he had it so tight, the girls couldn’t get it out. Of course, you can always just put straw bales all around the inside perimeter. Cover that in a tarp.

No. The floor level needs to be warmer, not the roof. Ventilation is so important, especially in the cold. Warmth turns to moisture, turns to frostbite.

I know. Just worried because the shed I'm looking at has 2 ventilation spots, plus 2 skylights, so I didn't think it was sealed enough. It's bigger too, 8x10 for my 15 chickens. They're used to huddling together in their current 8x4 coop.

Oh plus it has 3 windows, and 2 doors. Not very air-tight.

A, your girls are going to be so happy! B, if you keep the windows open (covered in hardware cloth), it still doesn’t look like enough ventilation. You might need to cut more.
I’m sure the shed will work better than you think. If you are still nervous, bring me the shed, and I’ll give you your choice of a red 12x12’ wood coop, or a green 10x12’!

I plan on opening the windows for sure in summertime. There is another window on the back of that shed for cross-breeze. Would I have to cover up the windows for winter though? In the hot weather, the side door will be open to a protected run and help air out the whole coop.

I was concerned about the drafts those windows would cause in the winter.

Drafts are bursts of air coming from the window behind me, making me cold, and blowing through my heating oil.
Wind is the stuff that moves through the window freely above their heads.
