MAMA: You are terrible! Thank Goodness you're 3 hours away. I LOVE YOUR SERAMAS, and if you were closer I would purposely have a "Bad Day" just so DH would let me have them.

Question: When you have chicks the old fashioned way, what food do you give everyone? I know the older ones shouldn't have the starter, and the babies shouldn't have the layer, so what do I do?

Well, I do have to make a trip out that way soon :)

I don't feed layer pellets, because I have heard they can do damage to the roos. I feed flock raiser and then just leave oyster shell out for the hens. HOWEVER... I have recently learned a VERY important lessons and my chicks will be getting medicated starter for at least 3 months from now on.

Quote: patrickschick ..... Hey I wanted to let you know, I candled these BCMxComet RIR and I am not sure they are fertile but with that roo I cant understand it, only thing is how old are the hens? I candled them when I brought them home before put in the bator and I didnt see any veining just saw the yolk sack in them and no movements. Last eve we candled again, and I would have had them what 4 days? and still no veining or movement. I see one that looks like it has a little eye in the middle which may be a viable one... I wonder how long they were off the nest too all the air cells looked good! poor things! I was so excited, but I wont give up hope yet! They will stay in for a while and if its only one, then so be it!! Thanks again !! BTW my only blue silkie is still alive, lockdown is wed already!!! fingers crossed!!!

Sally: I always have seen good veining on day4 with all of my eggs (yes, I break every rule AND candle every day) with perfect results. God must be looking out for me and my negligent stupidity. I think you'd see something by now, but as Blarney once said " If it doesn't stink it stays".

Another question, Does anyone know what would result from crossing a Pea Comb Olive Egger Roo with a BCM Hen? I can't find the answer anywhere, and I don't have luck getting answers on the Olive Egger thread. I think my questions are too juvenile for their expertise, LOL!! (They probably are).

I will try to help you answer your question. It depends on the EE rooster. The pea comb is dominate, but if any of the ancestors of the EE had a single comb, then you will get some chicks with single combs. By rights any of the pullets with a pea comb should lay dark green/olive eggs. If the EE roo has all pea comb genetics, then all the chicks will have pea combs. All the pullets should lay the dark green/olive eggs.

Its sad. I would think they are all duds. If you really want to incubate some thing I have eggs. Some would be pure, some would be EE. I have all my roos and hens running together. All of my chickens are blue, black, splash, or silver laced. Good Luck! BTW I would give them for free, as long as you would come and get them. I can't do many for free, maybe a dozen a week.

i am taking that young JG roo, and I have splash marans in the incubator now, does this sound like a good stock for meat birds...I am not concerned about the slow growth, I just need size...I will keep supplementing with freedom rangers until they get going and I have enough to start hatching my own.
If you wind up with plenty of pullets,,, give me a shout,,, considering them for layers, possibly with a black or blue copper Roo

Just love my Marans, and perhaps you could be an outlet for the extra roos that always come up from a hatch,,, seems they mean nothing at the local auctions,,, not sure if most people there are even familiar with the breed.

Keep me posted

Thank you for the answer! He came from a very pretty blue egg, an EE Mom (or maybe she was an Olive Egger) and Daddy was the largest FBCM I've ever seen. I asked if the Dad was normal and the lady said he was Ukranian, IDK, but huge! So, by what you're saying some would have single combs, and then not carry the colored egg gene? I think I got it! Thanks Heather.
