Spent lots of time today planning new coops and reconfiguring the old ones. I think I have the breeds down that I am going to keep and we are adding a LF coop as well, just for pleasure. Don't know if I have share the two silkie babies that I decided to keep, so here they are.
This is Lucy:
and her buddy Ethel:
I am going to add them in to my calico project pen.
Why Holding Puppies of course!! and kids and chickens and peepers!!! lol I cleaned the two brooders and put fresh shavings in them, fed all the animals and family. We ran to a shed place to see if they had any used sheds cheap. Hubby ran to Lowes for the rest of the stuff we need for our 2nd PALLET coop he also got me my MUCH NEEDED Large utilitty sink for the lower level entrance so I can easily bleach and clean all my chicken stuff... I sure missed this one item from my old house!!! He put it all together and will install inthe am!! YAYAY!!! Dont forget to have a look at our full HARVEST MOON TONIGHT!!! Those silks are so pretty!!!
We played with our new chicks today. They were born on Friday. The yellow one is chicken nugget and the dark one is awesome. They are the first chicks we have ever hatched!! They seem to be doing well. Awesome has a funny looking knee, but he gets around just fine.
Mama2my4 I love Lucy's "hair". I purchased 6 speckled sussex back in August. 5 of them are speckled, but 1 has brown feathers instead of mahogony and the feathers on its head stand up like Lucy's. It makes it look like it has bead head 24/7.
Sally you are very lucky to have a husband that builds you coops. My husband has the best intentions (I think) but never has the time. Oh well, I guess that keeps my chicken numbers in check!!
Any one still hatching this late in the season? I just set another batch of eggs this morning. This was the corrected shipment from the last batch I purchased( they sent me the wrong breed).

You know once I showed him how awesome the pallet idea was, he was actually thrilled to make the first one!!! I was kinda sorry though as that he was doing that instead of my job!! I was digging about 40 + holes for the fence and concreting and it was WAY WAY too much for me, but I was done about the same time he was so he helped with a few sections of staplin the fence on, which was a blessing as it was real hard to pull the fencing tight and staple at the same time!!!!!! But he is good when he wants to work!!! LOL I complain enough and it gets done!!!

AIR CELLs UGGGG!! Chads BCM eggs (7 of them) that I put in the bator as a staggered hatch with my HALO......ASSUMING Day 18 is tomorrow!!!
I think I was pretty right on the 6/7 day mark, I candled when I turned just now and am thinking that PERHAPS the air cells should be smaller, and that having lockdown of Halo and High humidity for those 4 days may have screwed the process up for these guys..... I also dont think the embryo's look the same sizes, some look alot smaller and some fill the eggs completely dark!!! Another words UHHHH OOOOOOOO !!!
NOW WHAT??? I have ran it for the past 2 days at like 22/28% and they still look like 14 day air cells!
Wonder if I should HOLD OFF and NOT do LOCKDOWN tomorrow!!!
THOUGHTS!!! I am trying to find day 18 candle pics to refer to!!! if you have any 14 or 18 day please post!! Thanks
We spent today up by Hawk Mountain at a class on foraging for wild edibles. I soooo love learning new things. Tomorrow we'll concentrate on getting some of the chicken coop cleanup done for fall...and get some firewood stacked I think. Chickens should like that project..sure there are lots of nice bugs hiding under the wood.
