Penny Pinching Ideas On Coop Making

I am afraid Ive tried the electric fence once and it didnt work for me. I love the recycling ideas. What about waterers and feeders? Anyone have some good ideas?

I just learned that alot of large factories get supplies on pallets with 8x4 pressed wood layed on top so that would be good for inside coop. wish I knew before I bought 10 sheets to floor the attic.

My husband built our coop and he put a lot of thought and time in it. He couldn't decide what to do for latches at first either but then decided to build them out of wood! There are two doors side by side (on each side of the coop) that open side by side and he put a wooden bar across that fits into wooden brackets (one built on each door) and you just slide the bar over to open the doors. This has worked very well and fits well with the coop.

See if there is a freecycle in your area...I have gotten wood, tools, roofing materials and hardware for free, as well as getting (and getting rid of which is sometimes even better) kids toys and clothes, electronics, raw meat for my dog...the list goes on. It is a wonderful resource!

Sure, Gatekeeper, I will get some posted shortly...

Okay, let's see if I can do this. First here is a picture of the side. The opposite side is just like it.

And now, here's the back. It works the same way, only it opens from the top. There's a screen door inside so I can open up this outside door and still let air in. The front door works the same (although minus the screen) and that is where my chick'ns go in and out so it's most always open.

Also, as far as feeders, my dad made my mom one that hangs on the side of the coop. It's like a wooden rectangular box with a lid (I think he made the lid out of bent tin) on the top where she can open it up and pour feed in. There's a wooden tray with a lip on the bottom that extends out beyond the "wooden tank" above and it's just like those self feeders you buy. The chickens can't get in and scratch it out but it gives them a continuous supply for a while and it looks good too.

Hope these pictures post okay. Here goes.
