people dumping geese

Domestic Geese are very vulnerable to predators. Also dumping domestic fowl is illegal. The birds can mate with native birds thus wrecking the species local population.

I still don't think it would be that bad of a problem. Do know how cool a mallard mix with a stebbie would look? lol. But wouldn't they just sleep on the pond at night with the others?

Many domestic birds will come close to the shore to rest. This leaves them vulnerable to:

*Owls

*Raccoons

*Possums

*Minks

* Stray dogs

Yes it is possible for them to survive when released but it is usually a very hard short life.

but then, as you said, you don't yet know much about ducks and geese.

time to do a bit more reading... once you understand some of the differences between domestic and wild ducks and geese, and what they require to survive, and what happens to the gene pool of wild breeds when domestic blood is introudced, it will be 'logical' to understand that dumping domestic waterfowl with wild ones will introduce lots of risks to both the wild and domestic birds.

often the problem is that folks don't really understand the consequences to either the wild birds or the ones they're dumping. they're just tired of caring for the birds they own, so they toss them in some public park or wetlands assuming the birds will be fine, instead of finding them a proper home that can and will care for them. sadly, it's not good for either the dumped birds or the wild ones. often this ends with the dumped birds being killed by predators they don't know how to avoid, or starving, because they don't know how to forage, or being malnourished because the food they're getting is stuff like bread that doesn't have the nutrition they need to be healthy. it would be much better if people simply met their responsibility to the birds they owned and took care of them, got them a good replacement home, or for that matter, humanely killed them and had them for dinner. much better than letting them starve.

we live in the country and we see dumped animals all the time. usually cats and dogs, but sometimes birds or even horses. I don't know why people think these animals can fend for themselves when they have never had to... instead they slowyly starve, get eaten by coyotes, get killed on the road, or shot by someone defending their livestock. it's sad that the people who dumped them just tossed them out, like trash, not considering the suffering that animal would have to endure before it dies.

If anyone has followed my blog, they would see that I write about a lot of deaths at the lake. Those that even survive for a little while still live dramatically shorter lives than if they were taken care of. I hate falling in love with the dumpees only to have them eaten or disappear (sometimes, they're even stolen by human beings for food!). People dumping ducks are basically feeding the coyotes, raccoons, owls and vultures in my area.

here they are they are doing great and he has become the top goose but is submissive to me and only gets mad when i picked his girl up i am sending some pictures to holderreads to have them tell me thier gender which i think is a male and female and to tell me if the one is a lavender or blue

i also think that it would be terrible to allow the domestic geese breed with the wild geese so i did what was necessary and gave the geese a new good permanent home with me
