People ever give you a hard time about...

Nessa, it does not make you a bad person. You are...picking your battles(?). Like letting the spouse do certian chores because their temperment/physical abilities are better suited for it.

No doubt if it came down to eating your weight in bean sprouts or doing the deed, you would be just fine.

Don't tell if they don't ask. If they ask I tell. If they don't like it, it is they that must deal with it. Almost all we eat comes from our garden, greenhouse or what we raised. If we spend $15 at the grocery store it usually for spices and such we can't make ourselves. Most think it is a good thing and love to pull up a chair and eat some real mother earth foods. Some are so disconnected from where and how their food gets to their table that it makes them uneasy when confronted with realities.

haven't had trouble REALLY yet because I am always quick to explain WHY I do it and most people do understand my compassion. I have changed some minds on where to get your meat from so I hope THAT continues. I also didn't understand how you could kill something you had named but we learn UP UNTIL the day we pass and fortunately I learned not to be a hypocrit and will ONLY eat my own meat now. It does NOT matter if its a pet or NOT. it should be treated humanely. plus my family understands I do not eat any of the meat they may have purchased so I will be providing some in the future so I can fit in at family dinners!

The last time we did some meaties we had my parents and brother-n-law come and help with the butchering. We sent chickens home with them for helping and my mom and sister would not eat or cook them......so, they gave the birds back and we ended up eating them all. I don't understand.....where do they think their supermarket chicken comes from???? I feel like alot of times people judge my family and I and label us as "poor" or "hicks" because we raise our own meat....I dunno?????

Possibly, I doubt it though. I think most people who are industrious enough to be able to raise their own meat, probably do pretty well in most areas of their life.

oh geez, we had that kind of discussion last year when hubby and I were talking to hubby's sister and stepmom about our plan to get turkeys, chickens, and ducks. I said it would be nice if we could have a FRESH turkey for thanksgiving. My sister-in-law flipped out and said she is NOT going to eat or have her kids eat anything that is home raised. If she is going to eat something, it will be from the store. I asked her what's the big difference other then 1 is fresh and the other is not. She said she doesn't care, everything she eats, must come from the grocery store

Its sad how people see home-grown food. But HEY! She eats veggies from Stepmom-in-law's garden!

We grew up knowing where our food came from. The best part of knowing your next meal personally is you know what you are putting in your mouth. You can't change some views but you can control what you choose to eat. A factory raised bird (nutritional value questionable) or your own hand raised birds.

I also am HAPPY to take in unwanted roo chicks...even if they are eventually going to the freezer. The will have a good life, with lots of treats, and an occasional scratch/snuggle.

got a few hens this year that way for eggs and possible processing. The previous owner was abit overwhelmed at the idea. Not that I like killing animals, but why waste? Especially if you have an obligation to raise a family at the same time?
