People getting cheap or just lazy ??

I'd say those people were cheap AND lazy too, Dixiedoodle. That's just tacky. Plumb tacky!

I give my extras to my in-laws when we go visit because they've done so many favors for us when DH & I were younger. A few other people get some as gifts now and then, but since the feed prices have escalated, I've been feeding most of the extras back to the flock.

I guess if anybody asks me outright to give away the eggs, I'll just have to explain about the feed prices. If they get offended, that's just tough.

About half of mine I give/trade away with friends and neighbors. I may not get anything right away, but I know a nice chunk of fish, mountain meat or some fresh vegis and fruits will be coming my way down the line.
I like the "feed the chickens" honor can idea. My DW works at a hospital and have alot of really nice people who have asked for eggs. I think I'm going to go and make a little can right now with a picture of my growing flock and send her with the 3 dozen eggs in my ice box, see what I get back. I would love to get $10 a week. That would cover over half my feed cost. I would never stop giving them away though, I would miss all the other fresh goodies I get in return.

ALoha,
Cory

Yes, those scenarios all make sense... and you are making the choice to do what you're doing. I would venture to guess that there are plenty of people out there who could easily afford to purchase their own eggs but will gladly take advantage of any "free deal".

When we first started getting a surplus of eggs, I gave them away to people. Now that our chickens aren't laying as many because of the weather, I'm not giving them away, except to some family members. But just as in your case, Bigzio, I give them to my family who I am closest to and to a neighbor who has helped me in many other ways.

A few years back our Raspberries produced an amazing crop-the canes were bent over with berries. We called several friends and offered them all the berries they wanted to pick-no one came but several said they'd take some if we picked them.
Needless to say the birds got a lot of berries.

also, if you get a bumper crop of anything --- think of donating to your local food bank

Candy

who would love to find free eggs, but who would at least go GET them and would trade or barter whatever ... later if not immediately

At the end of last summer, the city was considering a bylaw to regulate roadside farmers stands. Apparently, some of the commercial growers/sellers in the area said they couldn't compete with the prices of roadside stands b/c comm. sellers had to pay business licenses, pay taxes etc. The city was actually thinking of making roadside sellers get a business license or vendors permit. Of course there was a big stink made about it. I don't think the bylaw was actually passed, but I'm sure we have not heard the end of it. I say support your roadside markets!!!!!
