IMO, even putting a lock on the door to the run is not going to protect these birds from kids putting inappropriate items in. If the kids can't respect the privilege, then the privilege needs to be removed. They don't realize what a privilege it is to have animals at their school. I'd send a notice to every classroom, and enlist the aid of every teacher, perhaps teaching a short unit on moral and responsible behavior, especially as it relates to animals. This would be a great segway into a teaching time regarding bullying in general.
