Ya'll are awful awful awful for this thread. I am a Great Dane addict, but dangit if you aren't REALLY making me interested in this breed. We've had collieX's a and aussieX's so also like smart dogs (no offense to the danes

) But the red heelers are just darling!

HA no way. Smart dogs unfortunately learn how to get out of 6' fence with electric fences and are trouble! I can only handle so many smart dogs at a time

As it is now I have 3 danes (I just lost my smart one 4 days ago b/c he jumped a 5' gate and was killed by a car...don't get me started, I was hysterical as he was my obedience dog, canine good citizen...ugh..) anyhow, and my collie-mix (VERY SMART) but a kid biter as he was abused prior to adoption and is blind in one eye so is in the house 23hrs and 45 mins a day, and my husbands aussieX who is the smartest dog in the world and can NOT be contained, so is also indoors 23:45. So, until Skipper and Copper go off to the Rainbow Bridge, there will be no more 'herders' in my home, but it's good to see threads like this that let me know of dogs who are loving family members (I have 2 young kids) and protectors.

Tess does that too. Loves almost anyone she meets but hates other dogs. I call her an attention hog.

Its cute - but heck - BARK at least once if a stranger comes in.
I was alone the other night - hubby fighting a fire. I forgot to lock the door to the deck, I waited a while cause GInja followsme around, when she was asleep I went down to lock the door, the cat knocked something off the counter - I ran back up stairs - she was still sleeping!

If you want her to be protective, shut her away from strangers or anyone you don't want her to like and she will let you know when something strange is going on as she gets older. If you want a dog that loves everyone, show her off to everyone you know and let strangers pet her all the time. I did the latter and it shows. Sometimes I wish she was a bit more protective (she can be at times) but I also like not having to worry if she'll tear someone's leg off and carry it home.

TX dane Mom I sure am sorry for your loss. I understand oh too well the danes as I was a breeder of blues and blacks for 10 years. They sure are a heart breaking breed. I finally had to say enough, now I socialize Chihuahua's for a breeder best job in the world. I get them after they are weaned and I get to do all the hugging and cuddling as well as starting the paper training LOL. But it is great therapy for my fibro and my nerve damage (translation pain all day and all night). And it gives those babies a good start because they are like normal dogs instead of nippy and yippy.

Sorry got off topic, again sorry for your loss

Buster you sure did a great job with those babies, can't wait to hear about and see pics of the next ones.
