I am new to the BYC forum. I recently purchased a 7 week old bantam cochin frizzle. Her name is Kriket and she is living in the house. I really enjoy having her where I can watch her grow. She is now 10 weeks old and we have recently returned from a trip to Shelton, Washington. My friends thought I was crazy to bring her with me, however, my hubby felt is was for his best interest for me to take her with me. You see, she is very spoiled. As house chicken people I am sure you can understand. Kriket likes to be wrapped in a baby blanket and rocked to sleep at night. She does have a diaper that she wears in the house and does very good with it. We garden together and I am always looking for tasty bugs and worms for her. It is interesting that I have suffered with severe depression due to losing my job recently and I have truly found that sharing time and space with a house chicken is the BEST treatment for depression. How can anyone be unhappy or down while watching their crazy antics?

Pinkiesue, I completely agree with what you are saying. Having 2 indoor chickens myself, I find it is absolutely impossible to look at these birds and not feel happy! My house would be pretty bland without their clucks and chicken humor. Welcome to the club!

Finally!! A diaper for chickpea

I had adjusted a pattern from the flight suit that I had bought for her, I put elastic for the straps this morning but she seemed a little uncomfortable.. I know, I know, most people would think well, duh. it's a chicken in a diaper.... But even with that reasoning it seemed a bit off. so I replaced the elastic with t-shirt material, and viola! very nice. She's got her balance back, the poo doesn't come out the side, and well for a chicken in a diaper she looks great!

It's just an orange t-shirt, nothing fancy, but i'll get some pics up soon.

PinkieSue, that is a cute chick. What breed is she/he? I definately agree with spoiling your chicken. I'm so worried about what I'll do with Chickpea when I go leave the island

Just wanted to share a cool way to take pictures of your chickens for those of you that keep them inside the house... I was trying to figure out how to make a decent backdrop for some pictures but I don't really have anything lying around so I pulled up a big picture online that would fill my computer screen up, put the chickens in front of the screen and took a picture. Turned out pretty decent! These had more of the picture but I turned them into a collage so it cropped them.

When Gabby was outside I missed her so much. Tonight she came and sat on my lap for about a half hour on the couch,even after the strawberry shortcake was gone. LOL

So some new news...

You know how I live in Michigan. We have a Right to Farm Act. So anyway the township that I live in told me I have to get rid of my girls. I got a few hundred signatures on a petition to change the ordinance. i was ready to meet with the Twp. board. Anyway I decided to call Michigan Department of Agriculture. I spoke to a very nice guy who said that Michigan is full of crap. I not only don't have to get rid of my chickens I am having my place certified a farm by the State of Michigan. That will mean they can never bother me again. I had to write a Poultry Operations Guide for my farm. Then someone will come out to inspect my girls, the coop, and how we take care of them. Then they will certify me. I am sooooo happy
