people with house chickens

Well looks like I inadvertently got a house chicken by only having one baby from shipped eggs. I don't know if it's a roo or a hen but it's name is Lucky Fluffy lol. The baby has bonded with myself and female Neapolitan Mastiff. Its sure a friendly little booger. ( Swedish Flower Hen)

Chicks have flock mentality and will peep loudly until someone pays attention to it. I had a chick once that would scream if we walked out of her room. We had to let her follow us around the house, she'd take chicky dust baths in the rugs, slept on a warm computer keyboard, and used her cage mirror and blanket to snooze with, or she'd sleep in our hand. Chicks are very demanding and a single chick even moreso.

Agreed. This one is quite needy lol. And if I didn't mention it, he/she decided on his/her name. I say, "Hi Peep Bird" and it goes all nuts, running laps in the brooder, wanting me to either pick it up or to let it go by the dog. (rolls eyes)

Howdy Neighbor MargaretAnn! I'm in MN too. Your baby is so cute!
If you can survive the intense bonding  you're going to have a great friend.
A long time ago I had a banty we took camping. We were visiting around the picnic table with her as our centerpiece. I noticed she was about to do a little sunbathing so I told her, "lay down. Now, roll over!". My friends were in amazement over my "trained" chicken. I was naughty. It was so much fun I couldn't get myself to fess up that it was a trick but not a trained chicken. :D

hi i would love to have a chicken inside but the whole diaper thing doesn't seem healthy as the poop will stick to there feathers. how do you keep your chicken from crapping everywhere without a diaper?

We use old bath towels to cover area rugs, have ceramic tile floors throughout most of the house, and set up cardboard walls to cut off access to areas that have large area rugs or to keep from going to other rooms. We also clean up poop as soon as we see it. We launder the bath towels as needed. If a mirror is set up on the floor, the chicken will spend most of her time in front of it.

This is Chicken Nuggets. She has the run of the house. Her "flock" is two humans, a dog, and a cat. Learns commands as easily as a dog (if tempted with blueberries) She has more personality than most people I know.

This thread is AWESOME. I was given a chicken on Thursday (4-13) and I'm in LOVE. I have wanted one for a long time, but thought they had to be outside. I live in Reno, and it is still snowing, so I had NO intention of putting her outside. She's about 6 weeks, I was told she was 3 weeks. Anyways, I've been caring her on my shoulder, as that is the Only place that make her happy. If she isn't ON me, she throws a fit. I also have dogs and they are getting used to the idea. But I'm so happy to read that other keep chickens in the house and I'm not don't crazy lady. I thought everyone would think it was discussing that she kinda pooped here and there (but it's solid so it didn't seem to be a big deal)....I was concerned to let my dogs eat the poop, cause everyone keeps telling me I need to wash my hands after I touch her....? So I want any advice from you lovely chicken loving people! What can she eat? What can't she eat? I grew up in the city (N.Phoenix /Scottsdale )and now live outside of Reno, Nv....in a rural-ish area....and we have 1/4 acre. I want my girl to be a pet,and be able to have the run of the house with my dogs and cats....so again, any advice would be great! Thank you ALL again in advance. My heart is a flutter with all the anticipation of what a great companion my chicken is going to be, now that I know it's possible to keep her inside! Lol....

I don't have a house chicken mine live out side there prefer it, My buddy is Mono she is sweet and some time a comedian as well. I lived for a while in the Philippines and if you left you window open the niebghors chicken would come in and visit me I would give him pits of bread or fruit or some times he would just take it, because he was an alpha rooster and it was his right.
