I have a problem, maybe someone can help me.
Dottie has been sitting on six eggs. Today is Day 23 and hatching.
she is sitting in a rubbermaid dishpan on top of the clothes tower.
I read on another forum that a lady kept her hen on the nest for 24 days and the eggs hatched.
I do not expect these eggs to hatch. BUT Dottie will not leave them, she is the perfect mother.
Question: How do I remove the eggs on the 24th Day so that it is gentle for her. She will throw a fit.
So...I have a question...my lil house silkie is three weeks old, and is currently residing in a clear plastic tote ( we will be upgrading our living arrangements soon..Lol) I'm already noticing she can be pretty stinky (she is in pine shavings that I clean EVERY day)
I have read about sweet pdz working for odor?? Is this safe to sprinkle in with her pine shavings....or maybe a layer underneath the shavings?? I'm totally new to chicken ownership...Lol...so any thoughts are appreciated!! Thanks!!
We candled about a less than a week ago. I have NEVER done this, but all looked dark with a oxygen opening like a half moon at one of the ends.Broody's eggs can take longer to hatch than incubated eggs. If I were you I would go see her at night when it dark and she's sleeping and carefully slip one of the eggs out to candle. If you do it fast it won't hurt it. Every time my broody's eggs have hatched I've taken them out to look at them and they've been fine every time. Don't give up hope!![]()
We were just talking about this on the broody thread, here is what was said -OH MY....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the smell of a broody chicken poo is the worst. I wonder why it smells like that. ?

Yea broody poo is pretty rank some of the worst she will also drink tons of water and expel it quickly it will look like clear slimy swamp water she is trying to regulate her body temp
I always hear my chicks before they make a hole in the shell. It's actually pretty nifty. I know there is a certain amount of time they can survive before breaking the shell, but I think it's long like 12 hours. You might try to find out though just in case?Dottie's egg is making peep sounds. There is no hole in the shell.
Will the chick die because there is not hole.
How long can the chick go without a hole in the shell for air ????????
Oh!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dottie and I will never do this again.
I cannot digest food from the nerves I have.
Thank you
