A year ago, if someone told me I'd have chickens living indoors with me as pets, I'd laugh at them and think they were missing a few brain cells. Now I do the same with people who question why I do.

The thing I keep coming back to, is the fact that you can spend $2,500+ for an exotic bird that will be fragile, unbearably noisy, play favorites, potentially be unpredictable, and at some point will likely harm you or one of your other pets with that weapon of a beak.

OR

You can (in most cases) spend less than $10 on a little chicken to raise, spoil, cuddle up with, and love to your heart's content. Sure, the chickens don't speak English, but they sure seem to want and appreciate affection a lot more than a Macaw!

This is also the way I feel about it and try to explain to to people sometimes. Nobody seems to realize just how affectionate chickens can be! I've had cockatiels/lovebirds etc in the past and they were always grouchy, I'm sure it would be different if they were hand raised but still, Maddie was the sweetest little bird I've ever met! Most parrots won't lay down to cuddle on your chest , plus a nip from a chicken isn't going to remove any section of your finger/face haha!

Exactly! I've had cockatiels that were hand-raised that ended up being flappy and mean. I had a lovebird that was the antithesis of its name, and every macaw I've ever met just scared the crap out of me. In fact, I've got a scar on my wrist from one that decided to try and take my hand off after coming over to me and putting his foot out "Here, I want to perch on your arm".

A chicken will actually seem to enjoy human interaction, and I've never met one that didn't like a good cuddle. Even Polka Dot, my hen who had been an outside only bird for the first year of her life, will snuggle up and make happy chirps while she dozes off in my lap in front of the TV.

My chickens love to cuddle too! I fell asleep on the couch last night after I brought them inside for the evening and when my husband came home, all four chickens were cuddled up in the crook of my feet, like a cat!
I live the see chickens. They always run up to me to see if I have something tasty and will settle in for a cuddle if I pick them up.

I don't know ANY hook bills like that, even the most needy cockatoo!

I haven't posted pictures of my little goof ball in a while.... So when she was sprawled out on the floor in the sun, I quick snapped some pictures. She's so stinken cute.... She knows it too!

Just curious since I have never heard of keeping chickens in a house before (live in Ireland) do they not poop all over everything and stink the house up, or do you just have to continuously clean up after them? Hen above is super cute by the way

Some people choose to just clean up after their house birds, but most use chicken diapers. You can buy them from many places here on the internet. Some people even make them themselves. I am not at all skilled when it comes to the sewing machine.... So I just stick to buying them.

Wow I would love to do that with my frizzle cochins because they are just so cute and crazy tame but no1 else in the house would appreciate it thats for sure lol

I just brought my big hens in for the night. Then they decided they wanted more grass lol silly hens! Gotta love em'

I have a pair of silkies in my dining room. Until they make noise, you can't tell they are there and not smelly. Just clean their area where they sleep every other day. I currently vac a lot because they are molting lol. They sleep in a dog crate. My roo hates the diapers so I clean up after him, but my hen is a gem and does the diapers just fine. My babies are in brooders in the living room. No smell. I change water a cpl times a day and their litter once a day. My baby silkies are going to a new home soon. Their mommy will be a 8 yr old girl. She is so excited! Her parents are on BYC...we are trading chicks because I want the breed she has. I am training these babies to perch and be loved on, but I need to train them to wear diapers yet lol

I've been waiting to see some pictures of Sunni! She looks like she's doing wonderfully, she is so sweet!

If that's not a spoiled chicken that loves to be inside, I don't know what is! She is total house bird, that's for sure.
