My little white silkie Elsie, barely 5 months old laid her first egg today! I am so unbelievably proud of her! This is my first egg as a chicken mom, so I am ecstatic! 

Congrats! More eggs coming shortly to make an omelette with can I get a pic of Elsie? I have a white silkie chick right now, only about a week old.

That's early for a Silkie! I never had a Silkie lay earlier than 6-months.

I didn't even know this thread existed until just now, and I have a house chicken. She is an Ameraucana and her name is Brighton. We had to give away all of her other sisters and brother , and she's been on her own for almost a year now. She is incredibly spoiled, but is also very friendly and loves to be around us. She wears a diaper a decent amount of the time she's inside, but she'll always be picking at it.

Your Brighton is absolutely beautiful and obviously a well-spoiled baby - ha!

I hate to break it to you but Brighton is not an Ameraucana since she doesn't meet the APA standards. She is what you call an Easter Egger. Nothing wrong with either breed but you do want to call her by the correct breed.

Ameraucana (my avatar) are only obtained through private breeders. If you paid less than $20 for your Brighton in a feed store or through a hatchery she is an EE. There are only 8 recognized colors in APA Ameraucana - see http://www.ameraucana.org/scrapbook.html Your Brighton's comb is not a pea comb either as required by APA standards. An Ameraucana lays only decidedly blue eggs and not green or pink or white like EEs. Occasionally an EE can lay blue eggs but the rest of the body type will be disqualified under APA standards. Easter Eggers like Ameraucanas are wonderful temperament birds with outgoing talkative personalities and I wish they could be accepted into the APA just for their popularity alone but there are too many variables in their history and too many landrace colors and combs that they have been bypassed for APA acceptance. That's why the Ameraucanas were perfected from the EEs into a strict standard because of the variables of the EEs.

Brighton is a lovely girl and one day I will get an EE for her green or pink eggs but my coop is too full for the moment!
