people with house chickens

It looks like person can custom mix the feed of their (or their chickens) choosing from all non GMO and all organic sources. They have a large selection. So you can put in, or leave out, anything you want. I've known about this company for several months & actually spoke with one of their reps today. They have the highest standards I've ever seen for the products they sell & will be the ones I use when I get my flock. I think anyone who wants to go organic will see their value. I've included a vid of how I stumbled upon their site.

Where do you find your non GMO/soy feed? I just moved to Redding, CA, so I haven't really looked at my options... what brand do you give your birds?

I don't know what brand to recommend since I buy my feed store's specialty organic blend. We only have 3 hens at the moment - going up to 5 hens in the Spring. So we don't buy feed in huge commercial bags. We only get 5 lbs or less in packaged loose bulk of the organic specialty blend at our feed store and then refrigerate it to keep it fresher. On BYC my State of SoCalif has a thread and there are several people on it that sell homemade organic blends of non-GMO/no-SOY feed. Check your NoCalif BYC thread to see if there are meet-ups or people on the thread that have organic feed available. Otherwise any of your local feed stores should carry or even special order organic/no-SOY/no-GMO for you. Just be aware that those feeds will have a slightly lesser protein content because of not having SOY filler and you will need to supplement a little of your own proteins to your flock. There are so-called organic SOYs but since soy of any kind plays havoc on reproductive systems of humans and animals (eggs are in the reproductive process of laying hens) I do not recommend even Organic Soy for any living being. There is also some controversy regarding GMO corn/grains, as interfering with reproduction as well - however organic grains are safe. Since chickens are confined and totally reliant on our feeding them we have to be extra careful what we provide them as a diet. A hungry chicken will eat anything we give them even if it is something they would never eat in the wild so I am constantly researching diet and health information on chickens. There's a lot of information and misinformation and takes a while to weed out flakes from the truth to come to your own decisions/conclusions. Some birds can be picky about what organic feed they like, and of course, always keep feed fresh and rotate often instead of buying a huge bag of it to go stale.

I was just wondering.. do any of you guys feed your indoor babies something other than commercial feed? Rad can be REALLY picky at times, and has regected yet another brand of feed! Im getting her to eat cracked corn, freeze dried shrimp, freeze dried mealworms, freeze dried crickets and some fish pellets thrown in the mix.. but Im worried she isn't getting what she needs.. any suggestions!?

BTW- She LOVES anything people food.. oatmeal, yogurt, cereal, you name it ;)

Pancake gets organic local crumble feed, shelled unsalted sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, live meal worms, organic oatmeal also if I can find it in small batches organic scratch. But mainly she eats her organic crumbles. Also anything that she can scrounge off the floor like horse feed in the kitchen. I think your Rad might be coning you into letting her live off non chicky feed.

Also Sylvester017 thanks for the recommendation about the vit supplement.

You're welcome re the vit supplement - just note that it should be the supplement with NO iron

Mine is the brown EE (prominent ameracauana muffs and beard) that was cuddling and also with our dog. Concensus is it's a roo...lol That's what they are telling me. :-/ But if it's him you are talking about, yes. He's happy inside. He was a loner born of a bum hatch 3 days late (bad thermometer) and has been taking forever to fully feather out. He's 11 weeks now and still not fully (adult) feathered. The couple of times I took him outside he was not very happy. We live in Northern NY so our temps are single digits now so we won't be trying again until spring. I'm not sure if he'll transition to the coop with the younger ones. (I have 12 4 weekers and am keeping one roo and the girls to start my flock this spring.) He's very bonded with me and being around us, though he does good with the littles too. (I let them all out in our temporary chick room.) He has the run of the upstairs though when he's out. If he doesn't transition to the coop then (depending on the crowing) I'll definitely consider letting him stay a house chicken or a part time house chicken...lol since I'm very attatched to him.

yeah, that's the one i was talking about. he is really cute! i have a hen that lives inside part time, she sleeps inside during the winter and sometimes spends the day inside, too. but now she's mostly an inside chicken because it's cold. i can post her story, later, if you'd like??

Sure, we like to hear the stories, at least I do...lol I love that last pic I took of him the way he's looking at the camera all smug with his muffs puffed out...lol He's a sweetheart.
