This is "red hen" unique I know lol. But every night she will lay on this sweat shirt next to me and coo's while she sleeps. She's a great bird but her leg is hurt so she limps a lot. The other hens pick on her so I keep her alone from the flock. I let her free range till about 1 then I put her in the house and let the other flock out

That's the only way I've ever held a chicken....I didn't know it had a name though. Lol...but I've seen plenty of people hold them like that, and it seems to be bred into them. She's young, but that's the only way I've ever held her. Idk if it's her temperament or all chickens are like her, but she has never fought me to get free....after I'm sitting down with her I let her go, and she will perch on top of my hand or arm,but I only let her do that if I'm sitting. I'm too afraid she might lose her balance and fall. Anyways, thank you for letting me know, I definitely don't want to hurt her...

I'm pretty attached to her after only a week! Lol...

That is cool that you keep her from getting further injuries from the rest of the flock. How did she get the limp?

Thank you! I have decided to keep her inside. I bought her a chicken diaper and when I get home from work at night I put it on her and she hangs out with me until I go to bed at night. When she isn't with me..she is in our spare bathroom where she has a nest box and her own little area. No this won't cause a divorce...lol! My husband is building her an indoor coop. I don't understand why people spend thousands of dollars on parrots to have a pet bird, when they could get a chicken chick for 2.00 and it will be extremely lovable and cuddly and won't bite your finger off. Other than they don't learn to talk. Plus it will provide breakfast! My Silkie follows me around the house and jumps into my lap to be cuddled like a pet dog. I think the only thing most people would need to worry about is other pets in the home that may pose a danger to the chicken. I have worked with animal rescue groups for years and we have 1 large rescue dog, 2 rescue cats, 1 current rescue bottle kitten in the house and they just look at her walking around and don't think anything of it. They are used to this nonsense. But a chicken walking around could be in danger around normal pets.

That is wonderful! You're a real pet lover! And I agree about chickens making great pets. We have raised Persian Cats, Rottweilers, Cockteils, American and English Budgerigars, and had a Blue-fronted Amazon Parrot and by far, we have enjoyed our Chickens the best! They give you a lot of eggs in their prime, continue giving a few eggs even in old age, and past their prime they are still useful for garden fertilizer, weed and bug control, plus the younger hens learn from the older ones.

Silkies are very busy foragers.



The little Partridge Silkie is my gardening ccompanion and teaches the new pullets where the earthworms are!


This is the best wet soil to find earthworms!

That is cool that you keep her from getting further injuries from the rest of the flock.  How did she get the limp?

I think she sprained her chicken leg bouncing off the roost coming down, I have several teirs that they climb, they love being up at the ceiling level in my coop. She's laying eggs every morning. So she's happy. I messed with her this am after she laid an egg, I caught a starling and showed it to her, man she started BECOCKING like crazy. I was laughing so hard. She's a great hen.

It bouncing off of it line a ping pong ball but flying down. She's getting much better

So she's happy. I messed with her this am after she laid an egg, I caught a starling and showed it to her, man she started BECOCKING like crazy. I was laughing so hard. She's a great hen.

Chickens are crazy that way -- liking the highest level of their coop. I keep just one low perch in my coop so my hens have no choice but to use just the one perch. But then, I have only 3 chickens at the moment. Two more chickens are on order for late Spring. Hate to sound ignorant but DH and I didn't know what BECOCKING means? Red Hen sounds like a great chicken!

Also, they won't squawk so loud your ears bleed (I had a cockatiel who used to scream CONSTANTLY), or fly into a running ceiling fan or fly right out the front door like a parrot would. My chickens are 10 times friendlier than my parakeet, interact with me more, and much more resilient to little toddler hugs!
