pepper over load!!

I purposely grew hot peppers this year just for my chickens. No one in my family eats them.

I read that some people dry and grind up peppers and feed them to the chickens in January or Feb to help bring the chickens out of the winter and resume egg laying. Some people also said the capsaicin may have a mild de-worming effect.

I don't know that any of these things are true but I'm also guessing that they can't hurt either. I did this last spring and all the chickens gobbled up the roasted/dried/ground jalapeno peppers quite happily. They were pullets who didn't molt and hadn't stopped laying through the winter so I can't attest that it helped them resume egg laying but I thought I'd have a few peppers on hand this year just in case.

P.S. I do know that egg laying is related to the amount of light/length of day so I'm guessing that if the capsaicin has any effect it'd be more as a de-wormer than an induction to lay eggs. Again, no proof...just sharing what I've heard anecdotally.
