Perennial Gardeners Thread!!!

I took these pics yesterday and today of one of my favorite antique roses, Rosa Alba Suaveolens. I planted this over 20 years ago from a 1-quart plant. It's heritage dates to pre-1750. It is on its own roots. My house is over 100 years old, so when I got into roses, "antique" or "heritage" roses seemed a natural fit for me. And in this climate, roses grown on their own roots just makes sense. As you can see, it is HUGE, and I have to cut it back severely a couple of times a year. Most antique roses only bloom once a year, but you get thousands of blooms!! The aroma can sometimes be overwhelming!

Gilbert Wild and Sons has a great site with daylilies, iris, peony and hostas and a few other plants. The plants are big, healthy and guaranteed. They run sales frequently with great pricing.

I like to plant self seeding annuals in with my perennials for loads of spring color then when they are pulled the perennials take over. Spring bulbs, pansies, poppies and larkspur. a few petunias and marigold add addition color in the spring.
Perennials like mums, roses, peony, iris, daylilies, hostas, lambsear, red sage, honeysuckle, forsythia, crepe myrtles, althea, are great shrub/plants that are successful

I love that rose, Coopa Cabana! Beautiful. I must get DH to take pics in my garden, as I am a truly terrible photographer. One decent shot out of every couple dozen, lol!

I am truly enjoying the pics of everyone's gardens!!

My coneflowers are looking particularly nice this weekend, so I thought I'd share a couple of pics. They are a species coneflower (echinacea pallida). The flowers are waist high. I love this species variety - very hardy, and so very delicate looking!

I love daylilies too. I don't have anywhere near 65 cultivars though, but I have at least that many hostas

and roses too

My daylilies are just starting to burst into full bloom, I don't have enough early varieties.
Do you ever go on the lily auction site? I bought some really nice ones from there a couple winters ago.

My daylilies are just blooming this week, too! The problem I have with them is that the colors never bloom true. When ordering, I purposely avoid any mention of the words yellow, orange, coral, etc. I'm trying for pinks only. I have yet to find any daylily that truly blooms pink for me!! But I've ended up with some killer yellow and oranges!

My wife just said I could take out one of our rose beds for daylilies! Woohoo! To give you some background, my grandparents owned a daylily nursery before they passed, with about 1000 varieties. I grew up working for them as soon as I could walk. I just bought my first house last year and started my very own daylily collection. I've looked at the lily auction site but never purchased... I bought a few orders directly from hybridizers this year though.

This is from an order of daylilies from Watermill Daylilies. I received the daylilies the last week in May. The pictures are from the first week of June. So, not their strongest potential, but for a plant that has been in the ground only a month (shipped from Florida to California), very beautiful!
