I read of using a tack or pin for piercing the fat end of an egg for hard-boiling. The pin bent, I had no tacks. Then I thought, why not use the lancette diabetics use to poke their finger. It's about 1/16" long. Perfect every time. I know not everyone has those. But if you do, or know someone who could spare a new one, since they come in a box by the bazillion!, give it a try!
