Permethrin spray

I'm all for the Super Potion! They'll be going to bed soon, so I guess I'll wait to treat them & the coop tomorrow, but it kills me to think I'm putting them to bed with bugs on their face.
I know @casportpony is in Cali...
...are you in a warm climate too @room onthebroom
( I love your screen name BTW).
I don't think we have this type of flea here.

Thanks! Yes I'm in San Diego. We've never seen these on the birds before, but its the 1st time we've bought juveniles. Must've been a special gift from the feed store. When I called them to see if they had the permethrin in stock she said, "Oh yea! We use it here all the time." :barnie:he

It is easiest to treat birds at night, when they are roosting. Otherwise, at least for some of us, it's a rodeo catching annoyed birds during the day.
Be careful not to get crazy with stronger than recommended permethrin concentrations. It's best to follow the directions on the bottle rather than getting creative. Those rotten bugs will die anyway!

I suggested the stronger potion because I found the fleas very hard to treat with the weaker solution.

Edited to add:
Stronger potion on the fleas only and apply with a qtip. regular strength on the body of the birds and in the coop.

If you don't actually have bugs, it's best not to treat.
Not a bad idea to have treatment on hand tho....in case you do find bugs.

Have you checked them over real well for mites and/or lice?
Best done well after dark with a strong flashlight/headlight, easier to 'catch' bird and also to check for the mites that live in structure and only come out at night to feed off roosting birds.
Wipe a white paper towel along the underside of roost to look for red smears(smashed well fed mites).
Part the feathers right down to the skin around vent, head/neck and under wings.
Google images of lice/mites and their eggs before the inspection so you'll know what you're looking for.

Wow, that's good info aarrt - for how to check. Thanks! Being relatively new to this... this is an immensely helpful bunch of information... wow what a great thread! Thank you all for the measurements, dosages and application info! I like being prepared BEFORE I have to face a situation! yay! Thanks all!!!
