Permethrin spray

You could try a higher dose.
I think something is wrong with it. It froze or got too hot or something. I dipped all the chickens and then basically took some permethrin in the palm of my hand and rubbed it on the vent areas of the two worst affected hens (while they were in the sink in a bath of the solution for the second time yesterday). It was definitely a higher concentration.

Well, everyone still has living mites. More than 24 hours later. Looks like it helped a little on the ones most affected - but they also got two “baths” so maybe some of them just drowned.

I have elector psp on the way from Amazon. Hopefully my two worse off can wait another day. Should be here tomorrow.

Now to convince my husband that having bird feeders in the back yard on the hen house is a bad idea.

Mine aged out in a cabinet inside my house, in the dark, at room temperature. I can't believe it would do well either frozen or overheated in the sun.
Spinosad will work fine, and be way more expensive. I'll wait until permethrin really fails here before buying it.

Have you tried permethrin powder (poultry dust) in the coop?
I have not. But I have some dust on order since the DE bedding is doing nothing. I picked up the bedding today and it was just full of mites. I just put it in this morning.

I don’t think dusting the birds is a good idea for my flock. They are not very cooperative and I would need a LOT.

Permethrin dust is much harder to apply to the birds, and won't get into the nooks and cracks in the coop walls as well as the spray does. I do use the dust sometimes on the coop floor before adding fresh bedding during coop cleanout. That's only two times each year, generally.
DE is useless!
Make sure that you are wearing at least a N95 dust mask (available in paint departments) when using any product, and when cleaning out the coop. All that dust is dangerous to breathe.

Yeah, the DE is pretty useless for that kind of thing. I had my first mites this year. :barnieI used both the spray and the powder because I didn't want to miss any. Dusting the birds was an effort in futility, but it did work great in the bedding. I sprayed both the birds & the bedding first, let them dry, then powdered the bedding for extra measure.

I hope you can get a handle on it. :fl:fl

I know this is an old thread, but I've read with great interest. Would love to spray with permethrin, but can't find it available here in the UK. I am looking at a liquid "Professional Fly Killer" and wondering if it would do the same job - label says...

"Ready for use Fly Spray. Can be used to control Flies, Moths, Mosquitoes, Ants, Mites, Lice etc. 0.25% Permethrin, 0.125% Tetramethrin, 0.75% Piperonyl Butoxide"

Can anyone advise? There seems to be hardly anything available here in the UK apart from DE based powders. I can get a permethrin dust (Not licenced for poultry, but I can get/use it) but a liquid applied with a sprayer looks a much easier/better option.

Any ideas?

In the UK other products may be available, and approved for use on poultry, or not. Check before you use it! If this product isn't labeled for this use, look further. It would not be okay to use in the USA.
