Permethrin spray

Pics
Sorry to revive an older thread, but found our first louse on one of our free ranging chickens. I can't find any of the main permethrin products at our local stores, but they do have Bayer brand Permectrin II (same ingredients as the Martin's brand permethrin 10) and lists it as a treatment for poultry. Anyone have experience with that product?

What I cannot find is information on is how to apply the liquid to the chicken. Do I completely saturate the chickens by spraying them down? One video on YouTube showed a person just lightly spraying underneath the chicken's wings and around their behind, but that didn't seem thorough enough to me. Or has anyone tried the dip method with a five gallon bucket? If I spray down their coop and close it off during the day, will it be clear enough to let them go back in at night? I'm also unclear on what people mean with 'make sure to get the face of the chicken'. Do I need to rub the liquid on their combs too? Any help is appreciated. I'm a little lost as usually our gals are great about using their dust bath to prevent any infestations.

There should be directions in the packaging if it's a product labeled for poultry, including how to dilute it, and how much to apply per bird. With the Gordon's, at least, spritzing lightly does well, as long as it gets to skin. saturating every inch of the bird would be more than the recommended amount.
Hate mites!!!

Do I completely saturate the chickens by spraying them down?
I just give a few squirts around the vent and neck, under each wing and on the belly.
Make sure you get it on the skin.
Repeat after about 7 days, then check in another 7 days and if any live lice treat again.
Don't need to treat coop unless you have Roost Mites.

Does anyone know whether leftover solution from the first application can be reused after seven days?

Permectrin II is Permethrin 10 as you found out. Maybe this will help. I have posted this previously. This will work for both lice and mites. I had some birds that were severely infested. I thought they were just molting but weren't getting their feathers back in when I discovered they had mites. I did some research and came up with permethrin. It works for both lice and mites. There is no egg withdrawal period with permethrin. For the mites, I have used the dust on the birds and in their nest boxes and sprayed inside of the coops, every crack and crevice, on and under the roosts, ceiling, walls, floors, anywhere the mites can hide. Nothing will kill the pests eggs so repeated (3 or 4) weekly treatments are necessary. Wear special clothing including a mask and gloves. I did a weekly spraying for awhile and put permethrin dust in the nest boxes, originally sprayed the birds getting under the wings and worked it through their feathers with gloves which you can also do with the dust. It will take a few weekly applications. Slowly my birds began to recover and get their feathers back in. I think if I hadn't treated with the permethrin when I did I probably would have lost some birds to the mites. The birds were in bad condition. Both are effective treatment. Both only kill live pests, not the mite or lice eggs eggs. Some people also use it for stick tight fleas that usually attach to the face of a bird. I use permethrin and put it on the ticks. They should eventually fall off. Good luck...

Wow, thanks for this info. I've been using permethrin for mosquito control mostly, though I heard that it can be used to treat scabies and lice (I guess I saw a thread about it somewhere, can't find it though). Weekly spraying might work but if you're dealing with bed bugs as well (there was another thread about this too) you might need powders like this based on diatomaceous earth or so.

Yes permethrin can be used for treating scabies and lice. I have tried DE and saw mo improvement. Permethrin is also used on clothing as an insecticide. Poultry dust usually has permethrin in it.
