Permethrin Spray

So back to my question those of you that use permethrin spray to combat insects in what manner do you apply it and where? I've read the entire instructions and once dry it is safe so I'm thinking of spraying the inside of the roosting area walls as they are not allowed in there during the day and outside after they go to the roost.

I mix it to the max dilution of 6.7 ounces to one gallon and spray everything except for the birds. Helps keeps the flies down for sure.

#1 I use aerosol permethrin on clothes to repel insects--it is the #1 thing for ticks--but don't know as it will work well as an area spray. The directions on the spray can say to remove pets, birds and fish during application. BTW I also own several sets of permethrin clothes that I wear when I'm working in the woods--haven't had a tick since.

#2 I have a DE filtered pool and the stuff comes with a warning about breathing it.
Considering that it can trap tiny algae very effectively I don't know as I want it in my or my chickens lungs. Considering when the dust themselves it will be flying through the air. Aside from pool filtration it is very good as a snail/slug deterrent around plants.

I have 10% permethrin and I noticed that they also have 13.something% but I wanted to try the smaller bottle. The dosage rates are exactly the same as yours for poultry houses.

The aerosol can permethrin for treating clothes may be a higher percentage than what is used to spray buildings and stuff after diluting with water. I have a can somewhere but can't find it, but remember the warnings were pretty harsh not to touch the wet cloth.

I would totally do the inside of the coop and then everywhere outdoors when theyre not occupying whichever area to let it dry. I have applied it in the middle of the night after putting my toddlers to bed and it was better for me not to deal w the gnats. I really saturated the ground and all the puddles in the yard, everything in my efforts to battle the flipn gnats. They took 42 of my birds(only 1 large fowl rest quail) and i know several other peoples flocks in the area have suffered losses too. I had to respray everytime the grass was cut or it rained and thats been 10 times in two months. Gotta do it again too, theyre really nasty.

I don't recall that many gnats when we lived in LaPlace but we didn't have chickens either back then. The mosquitoes could sure carry you off and if you didn't watch out you would find an alligator in your yard looking for a free meal. Mowing the grass better happen real often in the summer... and my favorite is walking outside a 7am to go to work and breaking out in a sweat before I could get my truck started. Don't get me wrong we both loved living in south Louisiana and really miss the food...

Thanks for the info on how you spray.

My aerosol can says o.50% permethrin and 99.5% inert ingredients. It is for spraying clothes and gear. It does say not to touch when wet.

Why not use D.E. so they can dust in it?
I have used DE with poor results. I'm sure it might help but not a cure.

I spray the inside of my coops thoroughly, every crack and crevice, walls, ceiling, floor, nest boxes, on and under the roosts. Permethrin will kill the pests but not their eggs so repeat spraying is a must. I would spray weekly initially.

Try a pan of water with some dish soap in it. Gnats will be attracted to the moisture and the soap helps trap them. I use it if I get gnats in my house plants and it works great. Just don't put it where the animals can drink it and change it out as needed.
