Really? How do you keep things sanitary? I have cats and dogs and kids in the house, but I do insist on keeping it clean...can't imagine trying to keep up with mopping up after chickens, too!

One of the differences to me between, say, a dog and a chicken, is that dogs are "denning" animals and chickens are not. A dog is very happy as a housepet because it's their instinct to have a den, but it's a chicken's instinct to roam around scratching up the ground and flying up to a roost at night. So it seems to me that chickens would naturally be happier outdoors. Although if your house holds a lot of undiapered chickens on a regular basis then maybe it wouldn't be unusual for them to scratch a bug out of the carpet...

That wasn't very nice.

I just can't imagine having undiapered chickens in the house after seeing the nasty stuff that my four can produce outside!

I have a serama as a house chicken. She's one of my favorite pets ever. She's a lot cleaner than my parrot and a lot more cuddly than my dog. I keep her in a guinea pig cage and when I'm home, she wears a diaper. I like the diaper with a pad, but in the evenings, she rarely defecates in the diaper anyway. (I got the diaper pattern from this forum! I modified it slightly by making the back one piece and using buttons instead of velcro. Its made out of recycled swim suit and each diaper takes me about 15 minutes to make.) I give her a bath about once a week and then blow dry her. I think this keeps her dander down, but I don't know for sure. I also wash her feet or put hand sanitizer on them when I get her out of her cage and clean her cage frequently. I understand my chicken love is a little crazy, but couldn't recommend a little house chicken more highly. We even take naps together!

She is wearing a diaper in this picture, it is just hard to see. The diaper is camo colored.

Well They do stay in a cage at night. When they are inside or want to come in I just simply put a towel on the couch and they sit, stand, preen etc. I've had 4 banty birds inside on the couch 1 day for around 45 minutes and only had 5 poops. Not hard to clean up at all. Wiht the Leghorns they sit on my lap anywhere..i fI'm watching TV, reading a book or even typing here on BYC they almost never do their business. I've maybe been pooped on 5 times by a leghorn in the past 3 years since I got them. To me they arn't hard to care for whatsoever. Like right now I have Kernal on my lap and Tyson on my shoulder, it's been about 20 minutes and they haven't pooped yet!

Okay, I see what you're saying. And honestly, I really was just teasing. It's helpful though to have a general idea of "how and when" people keep their chickens in the house, because when they just say "I keep several of my chickens in the house" my imagination has them running all over the house like my cats do during the day while I'm gone for 8 hours or so and I can only imagine where you'd find smelly chicken surprises if that were the case!

She looks so sweet. I finally got George to go outside today and he ended up huddled against something for shelter. IT was drizzling and he was getting wet. As soon as he saw me he got up and came to me. He knew he was coming inside. I put him down just inside the door.He waited for me to come back in before he left the door then went over to the chihuahua's carrier and made himself comfortable for a nap. He's still there.
