Pet chickens, Raising and Socialization

Mine love boiled egg. The yolk and whites. You can give them it as early as week 1, they don't need grit for it either. For other treats you can try yogurt, tomatoes, etc.. Just make sure you give grit once you give them anything besides egg and chick starter.

The first batch of 45 hatchery peeps went out immediately. After that, because those ones were already in there, I kept my subsequent hatchlings inside for a week prior to mixing them. So they wouldn't be so vulnerable to trampling by the bigger kids.

Here it is...as embarrassing as it looks...(my peeps came a day earlier than I expected, so I cobbled this together in a couple hours)...

Here they are a few days ago, mobbing me for a hand-out...

That is too funny... chicken stampede. I can't wait! Although ours will be much smaller, only 4 chicks. I am going to look for a bait shop around here but today they'll get their first treat of boiled egg! (That sounds so strange, feeding a chicken egg.... LOL)

This thread is really helpful, I was wondering the same thing.

I gave mine some grapes, cabbage, lettuce and cheese yesterday -- i did not know about the grit -- they will be okay until I get home this evening, I hope so.. I was going to pick up some bird grit at the grocery store, will that be okay?

Another month before the chicks come I cannot wait much longer or I'll eXpLoDe!

I hear ya! mine are coming in at the end of the month!!!

When I got my first chicks, I got them to come running up by putting a bit of a really loved treat on my finger tip. Patience helps. Once they get that first taste, they get friendly real quick! I usually use a mixture of a little bit of organic apple cider, homemade live yogurt (you could buy that as well) and a bit of chick starter. They LOVE it, and it's good for them.
