Pet Food Recommendations?

There are other versions of Wellness out now ..beef, lamb, turkey... but most have a staple of sweet potato in there ..and personally, I wouldn't want to eat sweet potatoes every single day!

If I ever get another dog ...I will go with a raw diet, if it's feasible. I've seen the results in some of my friends' dogs and it is remarkable!

We don't feed poultry to our dogs - never have and probably never will. Ocean was our choice, based on vet recommendation. Titan does well on PMI Exclusive Lamb and Rice. Whenever we try to change his food, he ends up with digestion issues. Dog droppings should not be the size of a Great Pyr!

Whole Dog Journal does an annual report on dog foods.

One of the ones they recommended very highly was that made by Fosters & Smith. If you are not familiar with them they are a couple of vets that sell pet supplies via their web site and also their own line of food.

We started our two Bassets on this and they have done great. We also converted our Golden to it and all of his skin problems disappeared.

With the product + shipping it was getting a bit pricey. Luckily, Costco started selling their own version of the Foster & Smith food under the Kirkland label. Same list of contents. The dogs love it and their coats look just as good and it is one-half the price.

*sigh* I feed our dogs whatever seems to be the best bargain AND best quality at our feed store. I know, I know, its really not good to switch their food, but honestly, with gas prices the way they are, and my DH having a 45 min commute each way every day, cutting back on dog food costs is a must

. On the flip side however, I supplement their kibble with home cooked dog food with fresh veggies (from our garden, or that have gone south in the crisper) and Missing Link mixed in. I have a lot of really old lamb meat in my freezer that the dogs adore and we (the humans in our family) dont.

Highly recommend Natural Balance grain-free dog food. A little pricey but my Irish terrier with a grain allergy has been doing well on it for years - and it is consentrated enough that he is very slightly overweight with about a cup and a half a day.

Actually, switching food isn't such a bad idea. I always switch my dogs' food between several brands and formulas that I approve of. My dogs don't have sensitive stomachs and they are not picky eaters. I think that by switching foods every few bags or so, you're making sure that all of the dogs' nutritional needs are being met, esp if one brand is lacking in one area. Also, you'll be less likely to be stuck without a food your dog likes if and when there is another recall.

My 140lb-er maintains on 8 cups a day split between 2 feedings. He has to have the grain free or he'll lose.
