Pet foxes

I've seen a lot of programs about the "domesticated" silver foxes. The color mutations really are amazing.

I've a friend that has a pair of Fennec and takes superb care of them... but let me tell you! I am person that has lived with parrots of every size and volume, and I can tune out screaming pretty well. It's part of my every day home life. But those fennecs!! They are in a class of their own for screaming. Yikes! Just be aware and educate yourself as much as possible. Some people can deal with all of the quirks, and some cannot.

I understand that the folks here are not 'normal' people (

) and are willing to deal with some crazy behaviors, noise (and possibly odor), but I just wanted to say that for anyone doing an internet search that stumbles across this thread.

I worked at a zoo and started a fox exibit . We had fennec , silvers , artic and reds .
The silvers had there scent bred out of them
And don't have the musky smell like te artics and the reds do . I don't think it would be a smart/ good idea to ever keep one of them in your house . We got the silver from a young girl who sold it to get a tattoo!! She walked it like a dog and it lived in a dog run and inside her house Part time and slept in her bed with her . He would wag his tail, And was very dog like

The reds I believe were wild caught and there for weren't Friendly, they came
From the mt hope auction and I believe they were sold by Amish ppl and there animals always seem
To be a little more skiddih , but I have seen some pretty tame reds( it all depends on how
Many generations from the wild)

The acetic was very nippy but playfule and was more outgoing than the silver . He was smelly tho

The fennecs I never really dealt with so u don't recall if they had a sent but I has a mentor who kept one as a pet and would sleep on bed with him and his wife and could be walked on a leash and was used in educational shows .

I would like to some day raise a pair of each as pets but be kept outside in proper enclosures .

I've raised silvers, reds, sage and fennics.
Foxes can make good pets if YOU have the training and temperment to deal with them.




Then again, the same thing could be said of any animal.

I'll stick with my chickens.

The tameness has more to do with being bottlefed. If it isnt bottlefed it will act wil no matter how many generations captive (except for the domestic ones in russia) so likely they were just parent rised reds. Mt Hope auction is very strict about the laws and its illegal to sell wild caught in Ohio. They are very strict about requiring that paper trail. They have so many people types up their backsides

oh, and my fennec is very quiet, but some arent.

I have done quite a bit of reading on the silver foxes in Siberia. I find the whole thing extremely interesting! I did read that you can get a Silver fox shipped straight from Siberia for around $7000.

I will say that owning an animal that would be wild is a big responsibility. I have owned a timber wolf hybrid. It takes a lot of work, patience and knowing the animal. With our family baby was great outsiders no she would rather have eaten another person. I have rescued a ferret some one let go because they said ferrets are wild. A domesticated ferret can not survive on the wild. Just be careful with a wild animal no matter how tame they seem they are and always will be a wild animal and will react that way. What worries me is people who will sell any animal to any person and that is where these poor animals get into trouble they get turned loss or there is a big bite problem and everyone with these animals is now under the microscope. I am glad that the OP is doing lots of research and not making a rash choice. I say do research and some more research before buying or getting any pet even a cat or dog. Make sure that you have the time money and energy for that animal.
