SAME THING

a breed is a different variety within the same species. the japanese quail is also called a button quail and is a different species than the coturnix. the button quail can also be quite flighty. i have a few and they make the cutest little noises. as far as i know coturnix and buttons cannot interbreed.

AND WAS DILLY ALLEGEDLY PINIONED? I SAY ALLEGEDLY BECAUSE IF HE/SHE WAS PINIONED CORECTLY THAT WOULD BE A VERY LIKELY IMPOSSIBLITY. CLIPPING IS TEMPORARY, PINIONING IS PERMANENT. AS I HAVE A LARGE NUMBER OF BIRDS AND USE THEM FOR BREEDING PURPOSES I BELEIVE IN THE MOST SIMPLE AND PERMANENT SOLUTIONS.... COUPLE THAT WITH BOB WHITE AND PHEASANTS AND PINIONING 1 TIME AND IT LASTING FOR LIFE IS THE MOST SIMPLE. WAY BACK WHEN I STARTED OUT I USED TO CLIP WINGS--- INVARIABLY THERE WERE LOST BIRDS AS A RESULT--- WINGS NOT CLIPPED ENOUGH, WING FEATHERS GROW BACK, ETC... SINCE I STARTED PINIONING I HAVE YET TO LOOSE A SINGLE BIRD IN OVER A YEAR! IT ALSO HAS GREAT EFFECTS ON TEMPERMENT! IT TENDS TO CALM THE SPAZ CASES SOMEWHAT.... MY NASTY LIL BOBS ARENT NEARLY AS NASTY WHEN WE COMPLETE FLYING LESSONS 1 WEEK AFTER PINIONING..... SEEMS AS THO WHEN THEY CANT FLY WORTH A HOOT THEY DONT MIND BEING HANDLED NEARLY AS MUCH AS THEY DID WHEN THEY COULD FLY....(OR MAYBE ITS LANDING 5 FT AWAY FROM 2 LABS WHO ARE CONCENTRATING THEIR FULL ATTENTION ON YOU THE GAMEBIRD WHO NOW CANNOT FLY? ETHER WAY IT CALMS THEM A BIT! SUDDENLY THEY KINDA LIKE THE IDEA OF BEING SAFELY HELD BY A HUMAN....

oh- i missed the bit about pinioning, forgive me! i couldn't do that to any of my quails.

but the wing clipping does stop them from flying very far. they like to jump though. i miss my little babies so much, hopefully i can get my hands on some more eggs this spring and hatch em out. after clipping the wings i never felt too scared about letting them in the yard to scratch about and forage. there have been less dogs in town since the rabies epidemic. ACO has "shortened the leash" so to speak. dilly was the only one of my quails who acted like he wanted to fly everywhere, even after clipping.

button quail are cute and come in many colors but they are hard to make friendly. a pair is fun to watch but they don't seem to like being held as much as coturnix do, given that they are raised with people handling them. they are adorable!

You may want to recheck your facts. What are classically called "coturnix" are also refereed to as Japanese quail. They are exactly the same species no matter the color/strain etc.

Buttons are classified in the coturnix phylum, but a totally different species. Whether any species can interbreed has nothing to do with the argument.

Coturnix quail and Japanese quail are the exact same thing.

Katty Once You Get Over Doing It Its Quite Easy On Both You And The Birds--- I Do Mine At 3-4 Wks Of Age If Possible And They Really Dont Seem To Notice Or Mind--- As Hard As That Sounds To Beleive. The Hard Part Is Finding It In Yourself To Cowboy Up And Do It--- After The 1st One Its Easy...

is pinioning where you clip off the end of the wing itself? Do you do it at the joint or like only half of that bit of wing? I've never pinioned before, just clipped feathers...
