Pet Shops

I went to a pet store at a mall once....there were little baby hamsters in there!

Wow, that pet store doesn't know what its doing and I bet they don't care about animals.
I work at a pet store where I'm the rodent/reptile person. I really care about our animals, and I handle and socialize all the babies produced at the store to make good pets, and buy babies from local breeders that I know whether its snakes/lizards/rats/mice/rabbits ect. The rats are pets only, and I often get phone calls from people who's vets have referred them to me because I know more than they do about rodents, haha. We DO have cats and dogs but they are from registered breeders that the humane society checks on yearly and trust me, if you're a puppy mill there's no way you can pass those checks. Each breeder we get our cats/dogs from are professional and the animals are raised in the house and they work with at most 3 different breeds. They all have papers and pedigrees and are, yes, expensive because they are expensive breeds (we mainly get persians and Abyssinians as far as cats and stuff like papillons, Pomeranians, shih tzus, ect for dogs) and we are constantly using our right to refuse service to people we believe cant correctly care for the dog/cat because we get very attached to our animals and are picky about who they go to. The cats/dogs cages get cleaned several times a day and all that jazz. We have three fish experts and you wont find cleaner, healthier fish anywhere. We're knowledgeable and we care, and you can tell.

I love going into petstores to.
We have a petsmart and a petland. They both take good care of there animals the cages are always clean.
But there prieces are expensive. Once I saw a pair of button quail for something like $88 and I know a breeder who sells them for $6-$15 ea and I bet they were better anyways. Our petstores have only male hamsters so you can't breed them for sure.
and our petstores let you bring in your dogs. and I saw one employee with her dog.

Too much knowledge may not be a good thing as far as the management is concerned. You will probably require a higher hourly rate than the average high school drop-out and you may call them on their shortcomings....

These sorts of considerations do cross the mind of those in charge of the hiring.

We had a pet supplies plus in my area that was really awesome. Its a combination of a pet warehouse and a pet shop. Ausles of toys, food, cages, litter, you name it. They closed a couple of years ago. Now we have a tiny ma and pa shop I go in every once and awhile. I like going to the petco thats 45 minutes away when i can. But its not as good as pet supplies plus was.

I would say I wouldn't have problems with a shop like that, as long as the animals are healthy and the cages are clean.

Not all rabbits are bred by marshalss. A lot of pet shops also tend to buy them locally.

I love feed stores!! My favourite place to browse, along with book stores and stationery stores. I will rarely set foot in a pet store, though. I don't need any over priced and often stale pet food. I can be tempted by a fancy new leash occasionally, but usually the feed store has those, too.

Sadly, all the really good pet stores around here fail after a few years, but the chains staffed by the clueless for min wage keep rolling along.

There are several pet stores in the area I refuse to set foot in, because of the treatment of their animals. On the other hand, there's one the next town over I drive to, because I'm so impressed with the health of their animals and the intelligence of their staff. Of course one of my friends is also a manger over there...doesn't hurt!
