Pet Shops

It seems to be the way it goes around here. The Birdcage only survives because she breeds her own birds, the supplies are expensive, but people pay because everyone loves it. It also survives because she lives on the same property, so it's not like they're renting.

Kanchi, you're store sounds awesome. Wish there were more petstores like that around.

Too much knowledge may not be a good thing as far as the management is concerned. You will probably require a higher hourly rate than the average high school drop-out and you may call them on their shortcomings....

These sorts of considerations do cross the mind of those in charge of the hiring.

Yes, I guess that's true. All I was asking was $8.25/ hour...gawd forbid that one right? I guess Wal-Mart saw more in me than the pet stores did...I will climb that corporate ladder!

Honestly the bin-o-budgies sounds as bad as petsmart. I know how fast budgies can breed and can be "out of control" but to have that many they're obviously factory/bird-mill birds. Saddens my heart they breed them like that. I have several that people gave away because they were chronic egg layers, or mating with no box in the cage. With any animal you get what you breed, and if you turn the parents into compulsive egg laying machines you wind up with problem birds that no one wants.

I got a petsmart shut down by me for constant over crowding and mold in the budgie "area" They were rotten living conditions, poop in the water and food, no room to fly/land with out bumping into another budgie.

*end rant*

I love my pets, and that bird store sounds awesome to have around (mentioned a few posts up). I love caring people.... and I'm willing to pay a little more to someone who can get me the food I use locally, or better quality/variety of toys for them.

There is a wonderful aquarium shop here. They specialize in salt water, and they have the most beautiful fish I've ever seen. The staff is knowledgible and helpful, and doesn't mind browsers. I love to look at the live rock/sea creatures and exotic fish they carry. Because they are a speciality store, they can't afford to hire anyone who doesn't know what they are doing.

But I also like to visit other pet stores. Most of those around here host rescues on the weekends, and I just like looking at the animals. There is one store I don't care for, they sell designer (mutt) puppies and over priced house pets. I just love looking at all the animals and things for animals that most pet stores have.

I had a pet store for about 14 years, Still when I go into the large chains, most people working there have no knownledge about pets.

I hear them tell people all kinds of misinfo, like the fat goldfish ready yo have babies( egg layers) cant tell the differents between a finch and budgies. Went looking for a baby budgie for my grandson, over 10 stores every budgie was all over 6 months old. need a male around 6 weeks old to teach them to talk.

Ferrerts must be fixed, or females will die if not bred.

My price was never over priced. Finches -7.50, keets true babies- 8.50, hand fed cockatiels -50.00, hamster- 2.50, mices -0.75, White doves -10.00, and etc. reason people need supplies with all these. Would still have the store, but the x-wife thing.

I know what these pets cost no reason for their prices. I got mine from local breeders, like all rabbits were mismark from show stock. sold about 25 keets a week all from local breeders, right from the nest.

I do miss the people, and sharing my knowledge. To see the joy from the kids, when they get a true tame bird,or other pets.
These super store destroy this joy, selling animal that are too old to be tamed, giving all the false info.
