Yeah.. if I recall, the debate about whether or not they were getting their kittens/puppies from kitten/puppy mills is the reason Petsmart and Petco both switched to just hosting rescues.

Moonkit, the local petsmart in my area is probably 10 or so years and they have only had rescue cats and the only part of the situation of them and pets I had a problem with is our local humane society REFUSED to work with them for 3-4 years killing hundreds if not thousands of cats that could be adopted while they shipped cats from a neighboring county to be adopted, As I said it was the rescue who in MHO wanted to kill pets and not adopt them out and not pet'smarts fault our local society just being stupid.

Be that as it may.. I have faint memories in my childhood of seeing puppies and kittens for sale there.. and news stories about the protests and then the announcement that they were changing to hosting rescues. But that was a LONG time ago.. it could have easily been over a decade.

If you want to stop the sale of cats and dogs at pet stores, it would be wise to shop at stores, like Petco and Petsmart who no longer sell them. Up until the last 1-2 decades, it was common for all pet stores to carry and sell live cats and dogs. It is a recent change, and a good one that most large chains are supporting local adoption. I think it is silly to boycott a company based on its past when it has made a positive change.

I buy my feeder fish for my snake from a local store with some really knowledgeable folk running it. At the pet stores, they keep their two+ foot long snakes is a tiny little glass box!
At my local store, the fish tanks are so beautiful that I want to bring them all home! But then I'd have to clean the tank, and they don't live long enough for me. Also, some of the fish are over $700!

Pet store CAFOs.Kids always make me tour the pet store and beg me to rescue something.Our latest rescue 2 feeder fishies for 13 cents each....set up to care for them....don't ask!

Fish are treated like that almost everywhere. People don't think fish are worth very much... theydon't think anything is worth much other than money

I got a beta once it was from my husband's brother I took it because if I didn't I was afraid he would put it down the toilet NO he didn't say he would it was me that thought that andhow I took the beta and put him in a 5 gallon tank but I thought he may be lonely so I went to petsmart ( I KNOW ) to get someone he could look at. I got a little catfish looking fish they said the beta would bother him I name the beta glub glub and the cat fish looking fish was no name. I had him by the window so he could look out and see things the trees birds grass the wind blowing all sorts of things I fed him once a day or once in a while he would be hungry and I would give another feed. My son came to live with us and we have the daughter come live with us and I took the tank out and put it in my sons room I had vissions of the girls hurtting the two fish so all was well come in feed the fish go out the fish were with my son for 3 or four day but then I noticed Glub glub was face down like he was looking for something He was fine when I out him in with me son anyhow I tapped the tank m.... don't move I called Glub glub and tapped the tank again I know you don't do this but I wanted him to move well Glub glub was old and he had died but I didn't know it well I gave some thought I must of been feeding my Glub glub for a few day and him being dead.

I thought when they die they are to float but Glub glub didn't he is in the back yard in the ground my husband wanted me to flush him I said NO my daddy told me to release the animal you have to put them in the ground I put all in the ground babies bunnies that die just born wild birds cats killed everything of animal nature. My husband thinks I am crazy. few days ago we passed this guy there was a towel on the ground and this guy looked perplexed I told my husband to trun around he didn't want to I said I have all this knowledge and you know if there is anything to be done I know what to do. So he turned around we got to the man and he was with a kitten that was hit it was in the middle of the road and he took it off the road but didn't know what to do with it. As we stopped my husband told the man I Rhayden will know what to do. I took the poor little kitten but it was not good blood was all over the mouth and it was labored breathing/gurggling and bubles were coming out it's nose, it was suffering I said there is nothing can be done for it the man said he called animal control ut I know it takes time for them to get to him and the kitten would suffer till they got there and then it would suffer till it got to animal control. I said you are not gonna like this but it is suffering it is hurt to badly bubles are ot good and it's breathing is gurggled it has to be done this was so it doesn't suffer any longer I told the kitten and put my finger around the throat didn't have a BB GUN and this was the best thing to do at the time so it would suffer any longer.

The guy tuned around and said I don't want to see this I said I am sorry but it is best to end the suffering but this little kitten had a will to live I had stopped the heart the guy wanted to take it but the heart started up again so we took the kitten and I made sure it was gone, we went to a grocery store and I sat with the kitten it is a shame it looked like it got away from someone it didn't have any fleas on it and most of the time you don't find fleas is if they are in the house, my husband said some one is looking for a kitten I said yes so we went back and I put the kitten in the ground I said I was sorry I had to do that but you are free now.

I said to my husband LOOK WHAT YOU HAVE MADE ME a killer he said no you can dispatch animals now this is good. you no longer will have to take them to the pound I can't tell you how many animals is in the ground where I live one day when they dig up here say thousands of year from now they will think we sacrificed animals for all the bones here.
