Petrified of the flock block?

I used to make one of my own using chicken feed, sunflour seeds, cracked corn, raisins, oatmeal, wheat germ, peanut butter, eggs (and the crushed shells) and molasses. Don't recall the exact measurements of everything. Once all the ingredients were mixed together, I'd pat it into a foil baking pan (sprayed with no-stick first) and then bake it in the oven. Takes a while to bake all the way through but you want to do it until it gets kind of hard.

My homemade blocks never stuck together as well as the store bought ones but they were easy enough to make using stuff I always had on hand.
Thank you, will give that a go, it will keep them amused during these cold winter mornings when it gets harder to get out of bed to let them out

Funny aren't they.

When my chicks were in their brooder still, I wanted to add a few things to get them use to the outdoors stuff and give them a couple of things to check out and play with. I put a small flat rock to stand on, and a small branch for a perch. You thought that I had just put a rattle snake in there or something, they freaked. They were squacking, ran around in circles, then hid in the corner piling on top of each other. They thought the rock and branch were going to eat them and they were all going to die. It took hours for them to finally venture out of their corner to inspect. By the next day, they were climbing all over everything. :lau

Omgosh! Too funny. I have to wonder if they have that "Duh moment " once they realize they love the "intruder". Lol

A few years back I had about 20 chicks ten weeks old roaming about. I saved a small yogurt cup full if corn ear worms when I was processing corn from the garden for canning. I dumped that cup full of worms near them.

Slowly and cautiously the chicks started moving toward that pile, very slowly and cautiously. A worm moved!!! Run away, run away!!! But they did not run far. Pretty soon they slowly and cautiously started moving toward those worms. A worm moved!!! Run away, run away!!! I saw this repeat four or five times as I was silking the corn. Finally one very bold cockerel got close enough to grab a worm. That's all it took. In less than 30 seconds that entire pile was gone.

Sometimes chick TV is better than anything on cable, antenna, or satellite.

I've had those experiences with lots of other things they are supposed to love. Just be patient, they'll get there.

No longer petrified of the flock block!

So....I put a little 8" x 8" square flock block in for my buddies today. It has meal worms, seeds, cranberries...and other stuff all molded together like a bad Christmas fruitcake. You would of thought I put a hawk down on the brick the way they are acting!

Jeesh...I thought chickens loved those things.... Ugghhhh....they're killing me...:th
I hung a chick stick treat block in our run and they screeched and ran away! Still haven’t touched the thing two days later! Lol!
