I just the other day, got my first Pheasants.They are a 2 yr old pair of Silver Pheasants. I have never had them before....and altho I have tried researching several pages....I can not find info on proper feeding habits. The lady I got them from fed them cracked corn, and bread.

I know thats NOT a good diet for them, that they need higher protiene....but when I went to our local feed store, they told me to just feed them layer pellets.

OK, so....what do I need to feed these beautifull birds...to keep them at optimum health!? The male seems a bit sluggish...mostly standing with his head pulled down between his shoulders..but the female is quite active. Could it just be the shock from moveing them? Can I give them Nutri drench, for poultry? I threw some scratch out to them, and they just walked away from it. Right now I am feeding them layer crumbles...unmedicated..and grass clippings...which they seem to ignore.
I did read that they "needed" bushes, rock piles in thier run...and of course its covered. They have access to a "coop" and are next to chickens, but not with them. They have pine shaveings in the coop floor...and a tall roost.

Thier pen is temporary....but because of the subtleness of the rescue...I had to place them quickly.
I would love ANY advice I could get with them...I think they are beautifull birds...and would love to raise more!

To give it protein and to clean out (if anything) in its digestive system, feed it hard-boiled eggs - made real fine - along with Turkey Crumbles. That should help. Make sure protein is over 20% but less than 28% : )

PS: The female appears to be rather dark to be a Silver. Do you have other pictures? From that shot, it looks like she has a ring around her neck...but it could just be reflections off the chain-link
 
Well, Sadly the male didnt make it. He was sick looking when I got him, standing all hunched up...head pulled in tight to his shoulders. I took him inside, heat lamp, tried all I knew..he didnt make it. So, in the spring, I will either be looking for another pair, or looking to send this little female to a home.

Such a bummer because you just had him too! If he is only 2 years old "as claimed" - from whoever you bought the pair from - he is still quite young, just like a teen so I dunno why he should have problems. Have you tried contacting the person you got him from and ask questions if they have replacements? I mean, I am sure you paid a good deal on them so hope you can work something out for the next purchase or something. Before..when I sell local birds here, I would give them at least 50% off next purchase or some sort of replacement if what they bought didn't make it and it was already like 2-3 weeks later, and some, it's their own fault too! However, I changed that policy as soon as I found out that most of them just took advantage of me on my policy. Only about a handful had problems with what they bought because they are brand new to it but the rest just don't seem to care, since it was such a generous policy that I gave. You, on the other hand, seem to care about them quite a bit,(otherwise you wouldn't bother to come on here to ask questions and etc.) yet, the male still didn't make it so...you should at least get a replacement or something simular to him...

These were rescued birds. There are no others there, gladly. Im still not sure what I will do, about getting more, or just finding her a good home. I care about ALL of my animals very much. As a matter of fact, most of the "locals" around here say I pamper my animals. I would say not papmer, just take good care of them.
