Good quality silkie eggs are $5 each. With BAI and customs fees they are $7 without factoring shipping.

They also don't ship well so a 25% hatch rate on imported eggs is good for silkies. At the that rate, if I am lucky I could end up with chicks that cost $30. Half of which would be roosters and you can't tell what sex they are until they crow or lay an egg.

Excess roosters are useless as they are small to eat.

They also don't lay until quite late, lay few eggs and go broody often so from a business stand point, they are expensive to buy, expensive to raise, have poor vision due to feathers obstructing their peripheral sight to are good targets for dogs cats and hawks.

Parent stock would end up costing me too much money to be viable. Once I am fully established I may get a couple of dozen eggs.

I will re-try Polish as ornamental birds. They are very cute and lay bigger eggs more often.

I won't consider silkies unless I sell them unsexed as chicks, based on $12 per egg and you get whatever hatched. Your parent hen stock would end up costing over $100 per bird if you had a good silkie hatch and you managed to raise them to production.
i just started feather sexing my day old buff orpingtons

but with silkies i don't think they can be sexed that way

so i only keep a couple around at Adobo Farms.

I realize names for products differ from language to language in the Philippines so I will try to use what I know.

Recently my feed supplier switched my order from rice bran to corn. Both are known as "opa" here in Negros but the label on the corn is tahop.

Corn has 20+% less protein. I pay Php650/sack fit either product. Get the rice version over the corn of you can.

Kuya Marc,

I have a question on your feed at cocofarm. I'll post it here kuya marc if its ok??

here in the 1st part, this feed is for 6 weeks and up right? until what age will this be applicable?
before shifting to this next formula of feed?

another question is can I buy the selenium and amprolium at local drug store kuya?

thanks.

The first is for chicks less than six weeks.

Amprolium can be bought at any good agrivet. I get mine at D'Jade in Bacolod. Progressive.com.ph in manila is very extensive and ships.

If you skip the corn and just use rice bran for both, you will get enough selenium.

I am using Bayer Electrolyte and Vitamin premix now and it is complete. The problem is you have to buy it in 20kg sacks. Enough for 20 tons odd feed
Its 5400 pesos.

Progressive may sell it by the kilo.

Because of the cost of soy in the terms of pesos per gram of protein, I have just started removing it from my mix and adjusting the fish meal to balance the protein.

I will post the new recipe over the weekend when I have better internet

Hello to all BYC Philippines Subscribers!

I just bumped into this thread while doing research in raising chickens. I found Oz' BYC diary sometime last week and now this. Indeed, I've learned a lot of things by just reading these threads.

I'm a rookie in raising chickens and have little to no experience on this. I'm buying a trio from Oz, probably when he gets back from the US and when my coop is done.

For the time being, I decided to buy day-old-chicks from a local agrivet and see if I'm capable of brooding them based on the knowledge I got from forum. Its day three today and looks like all 10 of them are doing well. I'll be going back to the agrivet for some supplements but I have no idea which supplement works best. I've read about Vetracin but any other suggestions are welcome.

A big THANKS to everyone in this thread for sharing. More power and mabuhay po tayong lahat!
