I have 2 JGs- 1 splash and 1 blue. looks like they are both roos. The blue jg is a bit mean because he pecks me everytime i pick him up.... or maybe he's just defending himself. Anyways, i think the chicks see the blue jg because he stands out. They are not used to seeing blue chick. They accepted the rir, bo, and black ee because i already have these breeds. Just my opinion.

Yes maybe thats the reason. Good for him he got new cage. :)

Hi oz, the coop for the chicks isn't big enough to put a carton. but thanks for the advise.

So after laying at least 21 eggs outside the nest box, my pullet Matcha finally laid her egg inside the box today. Hoorrraayy!! Hopefully she lays there from now on.

I got my replacement chicks from oz and since i have no more cage i put them together with my other chicks. They seem to accept the new chicks except for the blue jg and they peck him. I thought it's normal because they are re-establishing their pecking order but to my surprise his head is now bleeding and when he saw me he run to me as if he's begging for help. So i got him out of the cage and he pecked me! it's funny because it's like he's saying "why the hell did you put me in this place!" lol i had to get a cage for him so he can rest and eat in peace.

So what ages do you have mixed together? Also how big is that space and how many chicks are in It?

If they are too cramped, or ages too diverse some are at risk of getting killed.

Also if blood is drawn on one chick it could set of a pecking frenzy to the death..

I have 2 small coops in my 10sqm backyard. The first coop has 4 adult chooks. The second coop has 15 chicks. They are 8 weeks and 6 weeks. I will send some of them to the province so they can free range but i will visit them often. I separated the chick who bled so they will not peck him.

6 and 8 weeks together sound fine as far as mixing ages together.

If you can find a pecking deterrent (in the US one is called rooster booster) to put on the wound it helps prevent further pecking because it tastes so bad

thanks @Phage i wish i could find somthing like that here in the Phils. But i am not that positive. I can't even find a crushed oyster shell for the pullet who's laying an egg.

@ozexpat are you giving your hens some oyster shells? If not, what are you giving them as source of calcium? Thanks
