The only photos I look at are on BYC or the ones I took.

That's probably part of it then. I would say the large majority of photos shared here are cell camera shots and are "good enough" for almost everything that happens daily. They're mostly snapshots. The cell cameras use average sampling to focus, and if you aren't doing it manually or don't know how, the camera app is calling the shots.

You can probably count the hardcore photographers on 1 hand, and the real enthusiast photographers with your remaining fingers and toes. Those images stand out more because the people taking them pay more attention to the details. Even good photographers take bad shots though, so I would expect to see a lot more "good enough" images on average.

I saw someone recently selling digital prints of “oil paintings” of peoples pets. They were done just like this. The price was ridiculous. And they charged an extra $5 just for a text box layer over top with the pet’s name.

It's definitely downsized some. This is one of my sharpest photos, but if you zoom in on here it is not anywhere near as sharp as on my laptop.
