It's a Pacific Gopher Snake. I just looked up snake in California... I had no idea there were so many here!

Yeah, they're pretty common.

Thanks...Wow we definitely don't have that issue! Our 2 are the Viper or Adder as they are sometimes known (our only venomous snake) and the Grass Snake which is harmless. I saw a grass snake in the driveway of my daughters school a few weeks ago actually, only the second one I've ever seen wild...my daughter was amazed
