I'm new here, and thanks to reading these posts, i think one of my my Maran hens has an impacted crop... Her breast is HUGE.. It has been like this for a few days.. The problem is that she is pretty wild, do i need to catch her on the roost and begin the olive oil/massage or mix some olive oil with soft bread and try that first? I only have 3 Maran hens that have been raised from chicks given to me as a Mother's Day gift last year, I would hate to lose her! Thanks in advance..

I think my hen has a sour crop rather than an inpacted crop, i got her when she went to roost and she had liquid coming out of her mouth when i tipped her to the ground.. did crop massage and quite a bit of liquid, grass and such came out and her crop was noticibly smaller, i've had her separated and am giving her plain yogurt mixed with soft oats that have been cooked and cooled, i've also added baby applesauce, she is eating and drinking fine, (i've been added ACV to her water as well) however, this evening when i went out to change her water i noticed bright red blood in her cage and it looks like it dripped into her water.. i picked her up, tipped her again and no liquid from her mouth, she is active and doesnt act sick.. i found that the blood is coming from her crop area where she has been picking... any ideas on where to go from here? i love her bunches and would really hate to lose her.... thanx in advance...

I am in the middle of a similar problem with my Red Star Sex Link, Pee Wee Reese. I'm pretty sure she had sour crop--squishy, water-balloon swollen crop, lethargic, not interested in food. In my searches for information, I found a lot of conflicting advice. I wound up following the advice from Threehorses on this site. I have found her advice to be sound in the past when I was dealing with a worming issue. These are the threads where she summarizes her advice:

I did not have the picking/bleeding problem with my bird, but you'll see from the posts that most people think that sour crop can be brought on by other stresses, so you might have an underlying problem. You might want to post this as a new topic so that folks see it and respond directly to your set of issues.

For what it's worth, here's what I have done so far: I massaged Pee Wee's crop Down-ward--I was scared to tip her upside down for fear she would aspirate the contents of the crop and either drown or get pneumonia. I did this several times a day for two days. I gave her a syringe with a couple ccs of olive oil (not mineral oil) and massaged some more. I went to the health-food store and bought probiotic capsules filled with powder containing both bifidobacillis and acidophilis; I sprinkled the powder from half a capsule into a tablespoon of very smooth applesauce. Pee Wee ate about three bites of it (and the other hens gobbled the rest). Today, the squishy stuff was gone. She ate some more applesauce and an entire boiled egg yolk (see Threehorses on why food should be dissolvable at this point in the treatment). I isolated her on my porch and waited until she pooped--solid! So I'm hopeful that tomorrow she'll still be okay. I'm following up with plain yogurt and more probiotics for the next few days.

Sending warm thoughts your way,

She seemed to be doing better, have been giving her Teramycin for 7 days, looked at her this a.m. and she's swollen again on the right side, but this feels different, more like swelling, when i checked the wound on her breast, there is greenish tint on the skin around the wound but no seepage, redness, etc , might be bruising from where she's picked.. i massaged, nothing came out and she's perky.. i'm supposed to stop the teramycin today, but have noticed she's not interested in the wheat bread soaked in yogurt mixed with baby applesauce... i'm at my wits end, but will keep trying... and thanks so much for responding to my post..
