Yes it absolutely gets hot in the summer, but mostly it's dry heat which to me isn't too bad. ...

I remember visiting the Beeville/Skidmore area in 1997 after they had 16 months or so of basically drought conditions. In 95 degree "dry heat", my FIL and I went golfing. I was standing on a tee box ready to hit my drive and the little tree behind spontaneously SPLIT IN HALF. FIL, said, "yep, its been dry lately, go ahead and hit the ball"

My personal rule of thumb for moving - as you go farther south, the snakes and bugs get bigger proportionately to the increased average temps....something else to consider

Lived in Charleston, SC for twenty+ years, DH and I finally retired and moved away from there. SC is just too hot and too flat for me. We now live in middle TN, and I love the scenery and the weather in the Kentucky/TN area. It's nice to see seasons again, and I haven't had to shovel snow since we moved here. DH is retired Navy and we lived in Saratoga Springs, NY, Groton CT and Kittery Maine. Saw enough snow in those areas to last me a lifetime. It's nice not to have to worry about hurricanes also, after Hugo in 89. BTW, Tennessee has no income tax.

Nonseq-yes we do have fire ants and you DO NOT want them!

They are the worst thing I have ever seen. After we get freak amounts of rain fall (3 in or more) they seem to explode in not only population, but size! They are a formittable force to be reckoned with and I have lost several chicks to them.
FarmerJanie- I actually live about an hour north of Beeville and yes it does get dry here!

I have never had a tree split behind me though!

...now back to the OP's question - I vote for TN. Almost moved southeast of Nashville about 15 years old, some days I really regret not going...

Tennessee is the best! Not too hot or humid (at least compared to AR, LA, TX, AL, etc.etc) winters are usually not bad either. If it does get cold it doesn't last long, although I have been told that what I think is cold ISN'T. It is sooo beautiful here! The first thing I noticed about Tennessee when I moved here in October of 2001, was that everything was still green! Grass...everything was still green and beautiful even at the end of the summer! Unheard of where I came from in north Louisiana. Plenty of houses for sale here also! Just don't look in Williamson county, it is the most expensive, but they also have the best schools if you have kids. I am sorry for your situation, but I moved here myself under similiar circumstances and I absolutely love it here! Come on down girl! Plenty of things to do, there is the country music scene, museums, the Nashville symphony, wineries, lots of festivals, pro football, hockey, baseball (if you are into sports) I can't even remember all the stuff there is to do here.

And they have more potent venom. Don't fire ants live in the South?

Yuppers, among other critters... but I was honest. I love my state, but I don't want anyone moving here and being miserable so I figure it's only fair to give fair warning.

BBQ, Chili, Steaks to die for... good gas prices from what I've heard others gripe about... uhhh... trying to balance for the snakes and I'm having a hard time... I really hate rattlers.
