Pick me a town!

Just wanted to say how sorry I am about your husband. I know EXACTLY what you're going through. I lost my husband Bill on July 12th.

Hope you find what you're looking for. I'm actually trying to move a little closer to where my husband is buried, which will also be closer to Travis AFB. Just got to find a place where I'm happy and have room for all the animals. And decent high school for my son. Not looking really hard yet, but soon.

We've got some nice places here in NC, and southward in SC. Climate is about perfect. Spring is warm, summer is hot and humid, but not as hot as Texas, and not TOO humid

, autumn is cool, and winter is cold, but not as cold as New England or Montana! There's the beautiful mountain ranges, the peaceful countryside, the gorgeous coast, and lots of smallish towns that have no problem with chickens.

You can find just about anything here, except superginormous cities. The Carolinas seem like paradise to me.

(Not meaning to diss other states; I just love this place! One side of my family is from SC and the other from backwoods NC.)

Dangnabbit, now I have to move to Montana.

Actually, I'm afraid of Montana winters, and after 15 years in Texas, I think my blood might be too thin for Montana.

They are not as bad as you may think....they give you time to do all the things inside the house that you have put off all summer!

Q9, don't feel bad about touting your state's awesomeness, that's a GOOD thing!!

Man now how sad is it that I'm getting jealous of this poor lady who's hubby is such a jerk because she gets to pick one of these awesome places?!?! Sheesh, I need help.

If I was in your boots I'd been in deep doodie already... too many great places. Maybe I should list the downsides of my home? If one of them is a dealbreaker than you can cross Texas off... at least it may help narrow the search anyways...

Very hot from June-August and pretty darn hot May and September, people don't know how to drive in snow/ice so stay off the roads on the rare occasion that hits, For those who like spring and fall, they don't exist much here. We get extra rain, that's the giveaway. Mosquitoes are an EVIL demon spawned plague that never ends, uhhhh.... possums, coons, foxes, skunks are about the worst predators around here but cottonmouths, copperheads and rattlers aren't fun, nor are the scorpions (never seen one since leaving the boonies but still) or the black widows (never have seen one alive) or the brown recluses (definitely seen those).... uhhh.... not much termite issues I've never even met anyone who's known anyone with a problem... oh but red ants are another devil spawn, buggers destroyed the horny toad population... to the point my kiddos may never see a live one outside a zoo... that's a sore spot. Ohhh tarantulas out there... but also road runners which are neat.

I hear that up in the Panhandle it gets cooler, but I've never been so I can't say... Uncle still raves about how much he loved living on the coast... no way I'd live anywhere near the border... not in this particular political climate anyways... heard some good things about the Piney Woods area of Texas... that's to the East of Dallas to the border of LA more wooded obviously... but I've only driven through so can't speak too well on it.

Hmm... that's all off the top of my head... I'll see if I can think of any more... better to know before...

I'm sorry I should have defined big city. Louisville is as big city as I am capable of handling lol. I did live near Boston and I swear its nice to visit but not so comfy longterm. If you do see someone driving in Louisville well in the snow and the car is a green honda thats my hubby. Yes it would be that easy to pick him out. He would be the only one not trying to land in a ditch. I had to import a Yankee just to find someone who could drive in the stuff. Very sad.

You're right pineapplemama! There are so many great places! I didn't know Montana was so beautiful!

I wonder if there is an online "farms to rent' listing? It would be cool to rent for a year till I learn the lay of the land and find something permanent.

colowyo0809 I would make him move if I could, but he has flat out refused. So I either live here with him, or go. I would feed him to the chickens, but I don't think I could stop with just him! lol I'd have to feed them all his "girlfriends" too!

Not sure about eastern MT, but DH is from western MT, and there is nothing there. There are fewer people in MT than in Columbus, OH. There's no industry. Logging is all gone. Nearest hospital is hours away......Although it is real pretty. And when we were out there last time, we talked about moving there. It's very very pretty. But where would we work? That was the big question. No jobs, and the land seemed pricey for the lack of opportunity.

Wow Montana is beautiful, but I would definately freeze! I have lived in South Texas almost my entire life, and I wouldn't leave this state for anything! Plus as I understand it Montana has bears and I don't want to encounter wildlife that could possibly eat me! The scarriest thing we have around here is hogs and they don't come in contact with humans too much. I will admit Texas is HOT, but I am used to it and if it gets below 40, me and the birds are not in a good mood! Hope you find a great place that you are looking for.
