Great pictures. How darn cute is the chick on the Momma duck? I hope your next attempt at removing it goes better (with no bruises!).

The duck is a Mallard/Runner cross

SO runner x mallards DO go broody!, this is good news, I have a runner x mallard duckling that I'm PRAYING is a girl, right now I am thinking the only one out of the three 1 week olds that is male is the one mallard mix that looks like a mallard.

I have TWO full blooded runners that both go(and seem to STAY) broody, whether they're sitting a nest or not, and so far my mallard mouse, has gone broody twice, so I'm wondering if these baby is a girl, two times the broody instinct, just how broody would she be? LOL

very pretty duck you have! watch out, she might go missing,

do you know who the daddy(s) of her eggs is?(or are), you'll have to post pics of the baby ducks once they hatch.

First off thank you for your concern for the chick, I am aware of the dangers of a duck raising a chick, and I've made sure the chick isnt' anywhere it could get to water. The duck hatched the chick because she started laying where Duchess, Nugget's GF had been laying, I thought I got all their eggs out but some must have been under the straw and I missed them. The nest the chicken is sitting on is a mix if different hen's eggs and Big Sis just decided she was going to sit on them, some are hers.
My drakes are a full Mallard a full Runner and two Mallard/Pekin crosses and Mallard/Runner cross. The hens are all either Runners, or a combination of Mallard/Runner and one Mallard/Pekin. I have two other hens who want to go broody and have started "hiding" their eggs from me.

The baby is doing well this morning, safely tucked under momma's wing when I get anywhere near them. I'm just glad she didn't abandon her nest when the early one hatched, I was worried about that. I'm also wondering if Big Sis realizes that the baby is a chicken and should be on her side of the big nest!

Here is last nights updated pic, the chick is growing rapidly and stays very near it's ducky mama. I give it water and starter in a little dish. The ducklings are due this weekend or Monday approx. and the duck is staying on her nest very well. The Chicken hen is sitting next to her and when momma duck goes after food and water the chick snuggles up with the other broody. I haven't gotten a pic yet because Sissy is a really big hen and hides the baby under her.

I've decided Midnight is an evil duck, if she wasn't such a good mommy she'd go to freezer camp! The beat the snot out of me on my way to work when I stopped to give the baby food and water!

Another baby!! This one looks more like mom, it's black, but it's still another chicken!!

Yes, broody ducks are that evil!

Awww, they are so cute but in that last picture I think that mommy duck is giving you the evil eye! lol. I would love to have a duck or two but no pond so alas............
